I've been in email contact with a fellow at the forest service - I'll try to hammer down the location soon, but let's go ahead and say that we're definitely planning to do this the weekend of December 17th. I'll check in as to whether we can use burning bear, or if he can suggest something similar.

And as soon as we're done, let's start planning another for later in winter, for those who might not be able to make it.

Never had any problems getting them to let me use Burning Bear during winter. They like having a little money in that box regardless of the season.

I can probably get out the weekend of the 18th. Might even have Genuine Draft's son with me, as he is moving back out West by Xmas.

Anybody familiar with the Mesa Cortina Trail up near Lake Dillon? Supposed to be a nice trail and I was told there is plenty of camping right near the trailhead. Only concern up there would be the beetle-kill trees in that area. But, the views would be great, folks that wanted to do a snowshoe could enjoy the 5 mile roundtrip hike out, and we'd be fairly close to town if someone needed an emergency Walmart run or something. Plus, no fees.

    Just throwing stuff out there.

Sounds interesting - although I'm not a fan of the beetle kill.

Could one of you moderator types update the first post in the thread to reflect that we've chosen the weekend of the 17-18th, but are still ironing out the location?

On the upside of that, I know that is an area heavy with Aspen groves. May be able to find a nice safe aspen grove to hang in. I was just up there this weekend, but I'll try to get up there this coming weekend and see what there is to see as far as near-to-the-road camping sites.

Doh! I can't do the 17th. I'll have to see if I can make the late winter one. Just more time to prep my gear!

    Peru Creek?

I have not skied the Mesa Cortina in years, but if I remember there was not a lot of trees for a quarter to a half mile. Parking was limited at the trailhead.

Peru Creek between Keystone and Montezuma would be good.

Meadow Creek north of I-70 across from Frisco would be good.

I prefer to stay off the I-70 corridor, but...

I still haven't heard from the forest service guy I've been talking to, but I'm still looking for possible locations. I was hoping to do some scouting this weekend, but too much stuff has come up.
