just got mine: 8.5 X 8.5, no factory taped seams, doing an exchange, upgraded to the "16 X 16" for a $7 difference. I'll seal it myself!

I say just seam seal it then test it. Either way, you should still be able to return it even after sealing it IMO

The "12 x 12" has reinforcement on only two opposite corners. Does this mean it is meant to be used as a diamond?

Yes, they intended this one to be hung on the diagonal. That's why there are no center tie outs. Most of us added center tie outs to hang it in porch mode or pup tent mode.

Finally. That "oh, that's the DIAGONAL measurement" excuse was a thinly-veiled attempt to "CYA". I'm glad they just admitted, "Hey, we made a mistake. We'll make it right if we can. Otherwise, we'll give you your money back."

FWIW...tarps are frequently listed by the cut fabric size and not the finished hemmed size so a 12x12 being an actual 11.5x11.5 is fairly normal...so say in the future you are ordering from one of our cottage suppliers, if a few inches makes a difference, you should confirm the finished size.

As far as the "16ft'er" (nominal 12x12) not being large enough for your "12ft" hammock, I suspect you are forgetting that the hammock is probably closer to 10ft when hung.

Your suspicion is correct sir..... My thought process is poor when flustered.
