Before I test my whoopies!

So I just installed my first set of whoopies on my HH Hyperlite and am excited to get out this weekend and try them out.

But I noticed that adding the dutch clips to my setup made my overall pack weight heavier than the stock HH suspension. (I weighed each piece individually.) The gain was something like 0.02oz, but still I wonder at the necessity of the dutch clips.

Currently I have 70" tree huggers from HH, which are pretty beefy, and have what looks to be a formidable stitch pattern on the loop ends. Can I forgo the dutch clips and just thread the webbing through the loop? The only mode of failure I can think of are those stitches tearing out, but like I said before, it appears to be a pretty strong connection...

Anyone have experience with this?

No problems feeding the webbing through the loop. Consider swapping out the webbing for some lighter ones. Are the HH ones you have 2" wide? And are they seatbelt webbing? The 1" webbing available from some vendors here is adequate and a bit lighter than the stock HH webbing IIRC.

Just the 1", but not seatbelt material. It's a bit beefier than that.

Is the seatbelt matl's stitching strong enough?

They weigh in at 4.8oz for a pair 70" lengths.

If they are the stock straps, the stitching should be strong enough since the HH recommended method of using them requires the loops and stiching to hold the load of the hammock IIRC. When using the the webbing around the tree, there would be less force on the loops because of the friction of the webbing on the tree bark.

There should be no problem threading the webbing through itself. The Dutch clips are just super convenient.

i have 6' straps from ahe- they weigh 3.2 oz. with little aluminum toggles.

i don't really use hardware at tree in most instances.

Not sure why the stitching would work with Dutch Clips, but fail otherwise. Am I missing something?

I have threaded my tree straps through their own loops on occasion, yes, with no problem.

To my way of thinking, adding things to the suspension system would make it more likely to fail. Any link you can take out means one less link to be weak.

No,you can't do that
Actually the purpose of the DC is when you can't easily disconnect your webbing with a cinch buckle or other all webbing suspension. You will be fine other than creating an imbalance in nature.
