I also use buffs for hunting in,,they make a hunter flo orange,,and camo,,and they work great for hiding everything except the eyes and you can even keep your ears uncovered for listening.

Think of a Buff as a no sew, non tapered, medium length cotton shirt sleeve that you can wear many configurations. I love mine but rarely use it because it seems my head is just too big for the common mans one-size-fits-most. I am not most.

Best I have found: a Pea Pod or Polar Pod. Just get the vent hole down reasonably small and all of the air surrounding your face and head will be MUCH warmer than the outside air, though not as warm as below the neck if you are using either clothing or a light top quilt neck collar style and to fill in gaps and prevent drafts. It is one of the commercial pods strongest points IMO. You can close it down if needed or to as small as a quarter or dime, or even all the way. You can, of course, if needed also be wearing all of your normal head/face protection inside of the Pea Pod. Or, you can lay on your side in a narrow hammock like a Claytor No Net, face on edge of hammock, and the Pod twisted so that the breathing vent is slightly below your face. Cold air will not be very good at rising to enter that vent.

I grow a beard every winter, keep it neat and trimmed so the wife's happy.
Often sleep out in -20, no problems.
And it's free.
I like to use a fleece scarf. It keeps my bald head toasty and I can cover my eyes with it to keep out the morning light. I woke up one morning in my hammock and found my entire face covered except for the bottom of my nose.
Don't argue with the alligator until after you cross the river.
Beards are the most manly way to go! And free!

I use a combination to things to keep my head and face warm. For my head I use an old fashioned stocking hat that I just pull down over my eyes and over the top of my nose. For my neck and face I use a neck gator that I pull up over my mouth. about the only thing anyone would see would be the tip of my nose sticking out
If it gets really cold (-20) I will put a balaclava on under those or wear an additional hood from a jacket.
Best I've found is a trapper type hat with real rabbit fur. Keeps your head and cheeks warm during the day and at night you undo the front flap so it covers your eyes and nose. The fur fluffs around your mouth but resists getting cold from the moisture in your breath. Make sure to spring for the real fur unless you are opposed to that. It makes all the difference in warmth. You can get them on sale for twenty bucks.
