Hey guys I will be backpacking/Hanging w/the Dallas Wildlife Group (meetup.com). If anyone is interested and would like to join feel free. The details are below:
Backpackers - Friday 19Nov10 - 21Nov10
Day hikers - Meet at John Archer Shelter (OT 122.6), Before 8am Sat. morning
Saturday's distance will be about 5.9 miles with a 5.9 mile return trip on Sunday. I will be driving out from DFW on Friday Nov 19th to Hwy 27 (OT mile 121.7) http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...93029f68f&z=19
Look for the parking area. Friday night I will hike about one mile East to John Archer Shelter (OT 122.6) and Hang in that general area for the night. The shelter is small and primitive so plan on bringing your own shelter. The whole Ouachita Trail is marked in blue blaze so finding your way should be easy. On Saturday morning 20 Nov at 8:00 a.m. we will meet to hike from John Archer Shelter to Story Creek (OT 116.7). Depending on the progress of the group, we may have a lot of time on Saturday so dress warm.
Sunday morning the backpackers will hike back. There is no shelter at our camp site Saturday night.
LOCATION: John Archer Shelter EAST of HWY 27
GPS: Bring a GPS if you have one. They are invaluable to finding your way in remote areas.
Some people may not be interested in backpacking. If you intend to only hike you can make your return hike that day making a total of 11.8 miles.
Be prepared for the weather. We will not cancel due to foul weather.
Story Creek is said to have year round water. Take a minimum of two liters of water for the movement of the hike from Archer to Story. Bring more water for meals and the times in between. I usually pack four liters of water when I know there will be water at my campsite. You will have to treat the water of course.
Good footwear, a warm sleeping bag, some kind of minimal shelter, rain gear, and a minimum of four liters of water are all a must.
