I think I'll give it a try. Worst case scenario I have to add a zipper later. Good point about ease of reaching outside, I didn't think of that.

Good luck with your sock/net combo, I like your idea and look forward to seeing the result

Couldn't you just cut a small slit in the netting and use some omni tape? That would still let you reach out, keep the weight low, and be small enough that sealing the opening with the tape would be easy? Just a thought.

Tape really isn't any lighter than a light zipper...that and I HATE the velcro noise!

As far as using a full drawstring entry/exit, that's basically the difference between Jeff's "hammock sock" and his/Risk's "travel pod". I currently use a sock (drawstring entry) for winter trips. The biggest advantage I can see with a zipper, other than ease and convenience, is that it's probably lighter because it allows you to form-fit the bivy material. I haven't tested this myself yet, but I'd bet you'd lose more weight by trimming the material than you'd gain by adding a zipper. I guess you could accomplish the same thing with some form of velcro, but again I HATE velcro

I thought that was the good thing about omni tape, it's quiet. Am I wrong about that? I'm with you on the hating velcro thing, I was excited when I heard the tape was less annoying.

You still get the Velcro noise with Omni tape.

The tube I made is only "form fitted" when it gets taken up by the drawstrings. I didn't want to mess with trying to form fit it at all other than that. It fits very well, with just enough room for an underquilt. I tied the drawstring ends to the rings/buckles in the suspension to keep the netting taut.

I should have posted pictures before I packed it to take on vacation.

Not really following you on it being lighter by adding a zipper. I don't see how not having a zipper would require more material.

Without a zipper, you'd be using a drawstring on the end for entry/exit. That means that one entire half of the bivy would have to be the same girth as the largest dimension of the hammock/user, which requires more material on that end. If you use a zipper, both ends can be form-fitted to the system, thereby reducing the necessary amount of material by quite a bit.

I understand what you are saying now. Great description by the way. Thanks.
