They both can be safe when made correctly and used correctly. Toggles used with a marlin spike hitch allow infinite adjustment in a lenght of webbing.

So, the Solomon bar scarab is actually a separate piece of line from the soft shackle itself? The "scarab" is a wrap that slides back and forth to cinch and hold the knot in place?

I've seen a whoopie loop slip off a toggle that was twisted by the MSH in a tree strap (and not checked by the hanger ). I've not seen a soft shackle fail.

That's how I use it. I'm not positive what TiredFeet was talking about. If I'm not mistaken, the Solomon Bar is used for the survival bracelets that are popular these days. So, maybe he was talking about something like that.

My answer: both are safer! You'd have to weigh an awful lot to have either fail -- even if you used your hammock as a trampoline. The materials we're using are pretty fantastic.

I had a soft shackle fail this past weekend Luckily it wasn't in the middle of the night I didn't find the soft shackle until the next day and it was laying about 10' away from the hammock.

Exactly! Less to worry about when it is tightened.
