.. Or is it? I don't have a protractor! If I hold my thumb and finger like a kid shoots a gun with his hand (index extended, thumb upright), the angle sure seems close to 30 degree. Am I right or talking balony?

What your describing, the "pistol", is 85-90° with my hand. For the purposes of finding a 30° angle for suspension, try the "scissor" or "peace sign", using the index finger and middle finger. The scissor appears to be about 45° with my hand.

On my hand it comes out pretty close. Distance between thumb tip and index finger tip (i.e., the hypotenuse) is about 6", give or take. Thumb tip to index finger center line is about 3".
Edit: aim the "pistol" horizontally, then align the suspension from thumb tip to index fingertip...
Interesting observation.

I suppose the real answer is that I just don't know unless I look at your hands or you test it against a known 30° angle. My left hand pistol is 85-90°, while my right hand pistol is only about a 70° angle. That's just too much variation between my own hands, let alone multiple people!
For me, this would be a horrible "rule of thumb."

My pistol is easily 90 degrees.
I can stretch a peace sign to 45, but if I just make a peace sign without stretching, it's very close to 30.
I think that Highbinder and Frawg are saying that if your thumb and forefinger are perpendicular to each other (at a 90), then an imaginary line drawn between the tip of your forefinger and the tip of your thumb should be about 30 degrees. It seems pretty close.
Highbinder/Frawg--please forgive me if I'm putting words in your mouth that are other than what you intended (I've been wrong before (and will without a doubt be again)).
You're gonna need a bigger hammock
Oops. Guess I should read more closely. :-)
