I think that works, to a point.

More likely, you just get used to your own stink. Spend some time around long-distance hikers and you'll soon discover there is little to no naturalization of BO. It's been 6 years since I came off the AT and every now and again, I think I get a hint of leftover BO that still hasn't gone away. It was a full 3 weeks before people in line behind me stopped making that sniffing sound as they were trying to figure out what stank so bad. I kind of miss that.

Someone on the WB site once told me that a majority of the hikers on the A.T. are there for the exercise, and either didn't really know how, or flat out disliked the camping part. So that plays a huge role in the percentages as well.

That's the impression I get from reading trail logs and WB as well. I'm surprised at how many are on the AT with almost no experience backpacking.

I have seen a lot of hammockers this year on the AT/LT in VT and NH. My experience is that if a shelter is open they tend to sleep in the shelter. If the shelter is busy/full or if its buggy they will hang.

My guess is that going to town and staying at hotel/hostel has more to do with their finances, how hard they have been pushing and the need for supplies, but not their method of sleeping.

On a recent multi day hike on the AT, my 10 yo son met "Sky Blue" and tried his bottom entry hammock which was a novelty since I use bridge hammocks. He made me laugh when he noted that it reaked like a stinky thru-hiker!

You'd surely have to sit up, maybe even stand up, but at least you wouldn't have to go for a walk.

I have this one. It's called the P-style. I've used it with a bottle. Works pretty well.

I love the go girl! It takes a little bit of practice. It's super light weight and easy to clean, and folds up small. It's made of silicon.

I find that I look forward to the hot shower at the end of a camping trip. I would say that I don't know if I could go more than a week without one, but there were a few stents during my bachelorhood where I may not have showered for a couple of weeks. Not really sure as it is all a bit hazy.

My 10yr old daughter was bugging me to go backpacking with the hammocks so we went up on the AT for a one nighter.I insisted my wife give her "peeing in the woods 101" before we left because it was her first time .It was very humorous trying to give her privacy, and talking her through it while I held a head lamp around the back side of a tree for her.Luckily she has not reached the total privacy stage so she was not scarred for life and handled it like a pro.
