Winter Sock Using Ted Bugnet Design

When I saw the Ted Bug Net and how simple it was, I thought I would take it a bit further and make a winter sock using the same type of design. The only real difference is for my WBBB I made a static line for the side opposite the entry side. The entry side is 1/8" shock cord. I'm still playing around with dimensions so it's still very unfinished.

The material came from Scott - 1.1 ripstop seconds in green. I used two 100" lengths and simply sewed the 2 pieces together on the bottom.

It's not finished as I'm making a pocket so it will hold a large sheet of IX-like material (floor underlayment) I got at Home Depot - The material is 3/32" thick, so 1 sheet will be enough I hope. It looks just like IX but much thicker. I tried it out after punching some small holes so air will get out when folding it. After sleeping with the IX last night, at 27*, it's just like the IX only thicker and heavier. I didn't have any condensation issues at all. Rough weight estimate as it is now is about 21 ounces for the whole shebang.
The ridge cap will be the last thing I sew on, so it's not shown right now.

Looks fantastic! When I first saw Pip's TED bugnet, a winter sock popped into mind.
I have the materials to make one, but that's the easy part: just can't find the time.

I'm wondering if you even want to put a cap on it. Perhaps the small gap up there may let in just the right amount of ventilation.

I was just about to head out and try my canvas TED inspired hammock sock.

Thanks MAD777. If all you need is the sock with no insulation, just 3 seams are needed. 2 for the shock cords and 1 to sew the bottom together. Took me longer to pin the 1.1 material (old hands) together than sewing it took.

Yeah, I still havent made up my mind about the cap - I'll probably made it small as you suggested - I'm only using entry/exit on one side, so a simple flap will probably be better. I can reach up and toss it over to one side to vent if needed.

Actually, I did just fine without the cap last night. So maybe I'll leave it off for now. Thanks for the tip!

I made a Tyvek sock this morning, and had decided to forgo the cap for that reason.

Thanks Redoleary! I just saw that wally world here has 7 oz canvas - sadly it's not in the $1.50 bin. I think I'll get some and make a deep winter sock with it.
Question - did you use shock cord or something else to hold up the canvas? I ask only because I had to really tighten the shock cord so it wouldn't droop down a few inches.

I recently made Pip's TED bugnet from tulle. Entry was from both sides. I used 3/32" shock cord. I measured the length of the hammock along the edge, then cut my shock cord to match that length when it was stretched to 3/4 of its maximum length. That still left it in plenty of tension along the ridgeline.

An s-biner or two at mid span, clipped to the rl takes most of the load.

Thanks MAD777, I used 1/8" and when tightened it really snaps into place. Didn't have any 3/32. Learn for next time.
