    The old water bottle trick

I was just curious if any of you use the army surplus style 2 qt canteen for your hot water bottle (http://www.joesarmynavyonline.com/se...Detail?no=7774 one like this). It is a softer material so I wondered about melting or leaking with some near boiling water in it.

I just think this seems like a great idea because of the insulated bag this comes with would be great for keeping it warmer throughout the night and not losing the heat as quickly as say a nalgene.

I would not try it with the old "soft" canteens. The current military plastic canteens can hold boiling water fine, but not the old ones. I like the new Nalgene canteens. I use a wool sock over my Nalgene and it lasts 7 hours in 10* cold.
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

+1 on the Nalgene: not only does it fit nicely inside of a sock (wool or fleece or otherwise) to stay warm and insulate your body, but the wide mouth ones are easier to get hot water into without splashing yourself than the old canteens were.

Another happy nalgene user. I made a custom fleece cover with drawstring to slide it in (or if backpacking, just wrap a shirt around it). That keeps it from burning me and regulates the heat to slowly release throughout the night.

If you happen to have a camp fire, just put the bottle close to the fire and let it warm up naturally. Leave the top of the bottle loose while it is sitting next to the fire to allow for some thermal expansion of the contents. Snug the top down and then slide it into a fleece or woolen enclosure.

The only reason to heat up a kettle of water to put into the bottle before bedtime would be if you were without a camp fire. While I realize there are times where no fire is appropriate - it just saddens me to think about a cold lonely camp site with no cheerful fire to warm the souls (and soles) of those who are there.

I tried that and the top warped and started leaking. I wouldn't recommend that method.
