    under-blanket?

    Hello all!

Last weekend I was out in my HH asym UL and it got to just below freezing. My top 20deg top quilt kept the top of me more than warm, but the simple foam pad that is part of the HH "winter" system didn't do much to keep the material of the hammock from feeling cold to the touch. An odd sensation none the less, my back losing heat and a really warm top side...

So this made me think, the foam doesn't seem to be doing enough (or anything?), but would something like cut of Insul-brite, or Insul Fleece, this reflective ripstop, http://www.diygearsupply.com/cgi-bin/shelf.cgi?numb=65 , or? as a simple blanket I could lay on top of help insulate me from the cold touch of the hammock material?

Also, does anyone know what either of those materials ways per sqft?

thoughts as I work towards figuring out my winter UQ'ing system...

    thanks!

the more I've read on here and experimented the more I've found that loft=warmth. I haven't tried insultex, but I've tried pads, vapor barriers, synthetics and down. I spent quite a bit of money trying alternatives but there is a reason most people on the forums use down. I highly recommend it. In the articles section there is an excellent article on vapor barriers. It is long but a good read. Expecially if you plan on using the Super shelter(which is basically a vapor barrier). Sorry if this didn't answer your question. Good luck!

yea, that I understand, I'm just thinking for temps that may not quite require a full UQ something like this may be just enough to help keep my bottom side warm enough. Of course, if the weight of these materials is more than what a 3/4 or 1/2 UQ then I would probably just go with that, but if it's less, and enough for my needs, it may be the solution I'm looking for in these cases.

    thanks!

The insul-brite is probably the heaviest, Insul-fleece is thinner and a bit ligher, but will probably work about the same as they're being compressed.

DIY Gear Supply's reflective ripstop is the lightest, though a space blanket would do the same thing (but noisy!)

The challenge with the last 2 is they don't breathe. You could end up with a damp backside, which could make you colder...

Laying on top of any flexible fabric would be a pain, at best... I'm not familiar with your setup, though.

Insul-brite and insul-fleece are $7/yd, and Walmart or Joann's normally have one of them in stock... (though, if your Joann's has it, I routinely have 40% off coupons... they even have an android/iphone app that delivers coupons to your phone so you don't worry about forgetting.)

thanks John! I'll have to look for a Joann's coupon and pick up some of the Insul- materials to play with.

I wonder, would the reflective Rip-Stop would be good for the top sheet of a UQ to add heat reflective properties??

I wonder if a reflective layer below the hammock material in the HH "Super Shelter" system would be enough?

    thanks!

Is the roll only a yard wide? Or is it 6.5 oz per running yard versus per square yard?

    Thanks in advance.
