    Removable BB Suspension?

Have been thinking a great deal about swapping out to whoopie slings lately on the Blackbird. And although I still might, what I really want is to be able to remove the (wet) suspension before packing up the hammock. Would a simple continuous loop and some dutch biners work?

Remove the current suspension from the hammock, attach the continuous loops where the old loops were, clip on the dutch biner and connect the stock hardware to the biner.

Now I suppose I can just roll up the wet webbing and keep it on the outside of the sack but then I still have to put it in my backpack. Also I realize that this idea adds a few grams the overall weight.

Good idea? Bad idea? You've done it and liked it - hated it? You went to whoopies anyway and love those more? I'm ordering some tarp hardware and was thinking I might as well do this at the same time.

That's exactly what many people do, me included. It does add several inches to the minimum length of your suspension but a side benefit is if you need to go short on your suspension, you can use the continuous loop from the hammock on a marlin spike hitch on the webbing close to the tree. You could probably take 12 to 16 inches off the minimum length of your suspension by bypassing the whoopie slings depending of course on how long your whoopie buries are. This is only handy in a situation where you had no choice but to use the trees that are too close together. The best option of course is to find another location. Also, this is only useful if you have a short tarp ridgeline or are not using one in good weather. You could make the continuous loops shorter than what Dutch offers if you want but then you assume the risks of not following manufacturers recommendations. I have made and used continuous loops as short as 5 inches but I'm comfortable with that. I am also comfortable with making whoopie slings with shorter buries than is recommended.

Thanks Bubba. I should have checked out your set up at Valens.

Using Dutch Whoopie Hooks to have a removable whoopie sling system is another way.

Yeah I'm tempted to grab that set up also. Then I can just swap back easily if I want. Hmmm.

You could use the existing loops that are holding the cinch buckles. Just attach a whoopie to it with a Dutch biner or whoopie hook. Saves you from replacing it and allows you to use the webbing easily if you have to bypass the whoopie slings. The cinch buckles are light and small enough to not be a bother but if you are striving for less clutter, then it may not be a consideration for you. Just a thought. I actually have the cinch buckles on my WBBB which is what I had at Valens. I have continuous loops on other hammocks.

Am I missing something here? If you have the adustable webbing with cinch buckles and don't want to put wet webbing in your bag or pack, why can't you just unthread the webbing througn the cinch buckle? Thats what I do with my Eno DN. I have AHE continous loops and cinch buckles. Takes only seconds either way.

There's the elephant. I knew there's one in this room.

Don't really know why that never crossed my mind.

    Thanks.

I recently ordered the whoopie hooks, installed them on my 8ft slings and they make dealing with wet suspension sooooo simple! I really like Bubbas straight to the webbing idea via marlin spike tho, hadnt thought of that, smart.
Im gonna be doing some kayaking this winter and will have extra storage. With the whoopie hooks ill be able to bring both my BB and DIY hammock, and swap out on the one suspension!

I thought you were also considering lightenting your set up as well.

I think it could fall in the same category as using biners on the webbing vs. feeding the webbing through the loop at the tree end. Either way works and one way is maybe 3 seconds faster but if you can do it quicker then why not? Also allows you to easily swap suspensions if you are like me and like to go back and forth between cinch buckles and whoopie slings. HYOH.
