    Cheap Fleece Underquilt

Has anyone ever made an underquilt from one of these cheap fleece bags from Wally World? I have one and it is very warm to sleep with, but I am wondering since I will never be sleeping in my hammock in temps less than 40 degrees, could it be used as an inexpensive DIY UQ? If anyone has done this, please fill me in on the details!

I've heard talk here before about it. Might search around. You'll never sleep in your hammock in temps less than 40 degrees? Man that's when it starts getting fun. My best nite in a hammock was around 10 degrees.

I raised the question of a fleece underquilt a while ago. The general thought was that it would work, but fleece is a little heavy and not very compressible. I don't really know if it would allow you to get to that 40* mark. It would probably be best to use it with a cheap, blue WalMart CCF pad.

Here's the thread I started way back:

I think the lowest I've been so far is just a little below freezing, around 30 or so. I was very comfortable using a 20 degree bag, a thick pad and wearing polypros and a beanie. The fleece UQ idea may very well work, but it'll have a drawback, unless you make some alterations to it. The main drawback that I can think of is that the fleece won't give good coverage at the top and bottom because of its sag. I'm sure that can be corrected, but I think you're better off going with something like a Potomac. It's the cheapest UQ on the market that I can think of, well made andis nice and warm from what I've been told be a couple of folks here.

I just made an overquilt out of one of those last night. I really don't think it would be a good material for UQs. I really don't think it would get you to 40 degrees used as a UQ.

Dangerous statement to say you'll never be under 40 degrees. You know the old saying about the best laid plans. I'd much rather have too much warmth and make adjustments than to not be able to get warm. But, maybe your weather guy is better than mine; I trust none of them.

I guess what I should have said was I don't plan trips when the temperature forecasted is going to be less than approximately 40 degrees. I used to enjoy cold weather outings, i'm not much in to them now. I have used my thermarest and down bag around 38-40 degrees and slept fine, but I could have been warmer. I have decided that some kind of underquilt is necessary for me to be completely comfortable in that temp range. So now I am exploring options.

    Thanks for the info.

I remembered that thread but I didn't know if anyone actually did it. I would like to eliminate using a pad. I am fairly recent convert to hammock camping and I am not a cold weather person at all! If I have to spend the money on a commercial UQ I will, I am just always looking for the cheapest way out.

    Thanks for the info.

What kind of hammock are you using? If it is a speer type, check out Just Jeff's hammock sock: http://www.tothewoods.net/HomemadeGearHammockSock.html

I like the idea and it could get you that extra few degrees you're looking for without resorting to a pad.

Whoa! I can't imagine that in a hammock. When I was a ground dweller, I did my share of cold nights. Not anymore though, cold just aint my thing. Maybe when I get more exp in my hammock.
