How low can you go? (pricewise)

So the DIY tick has taken hold. And yes, it is a tick cause once it's in ya, it's DANG hard to get out.

To kick this off, this week I've made a DL 11' hammock w/ whoopies and RL
(lime green taffeta inside, 1.1 gray outside)

    Down underquilt
(down jackets were procured from Goodwill, pretty high FP, not sure what though)

Bugnet - no picture of it yet.
and a hammock for my daughter's toy puppy.

all for the low price of 62$!!! How low in cost can you go in making stuff?

Fantastic looking set up. I don't think I can beat your cost for the down. I have done a full set up minus top quilt for a little over $100 using a synthetic UQ, hammock, bug net, and tarp.

    BTW - fantastic color combo.

I often recommend the GT UL. Under $20 for a hammock is hard to beat, even for materials, but the size is a bit small for some. I also started cheap with a blue pad ($6) and a cheap tarp ($20) and a sleeping bag I already owned. You can get under $50 easily by shopping around.

When bugs were bad, I slapped together a tube bug net from an $11 Mombasa net.

I was also able to snag military poncho liners for $10 and made my own PLUQs. Not as light as down, but it's a great piece for scouts and those on the cheap.

Awesome dejoha! That's the kind of stuff newbs wanna know. How to get into this cheap. I too have a pad and for REALLY cold temps. Here in Georgia I don't NEED a 0 deg UQ all year. Its just not that cold for that long.

    Thanks for the input!

Three 3/4 20 degree underquilts with 800 fp down out of Bloomindales luxe pillows for $35 each and I still have a King pillow left over to use. I'm just not ready for another down project just yet. That one saved us approximate $100 on each UQ The only thing I would different is to make them longer, I made them shorter than I should have.

My pink taffeta 90 wide and 11.5 long hammock = $19 compared to....well you've all seen the varied prices of these out there. With TED style bugnet, total price for both is $35.

    My backpack cart = priceless

Those items would be my latest.

I'm thrilled with DIY and have been since I started almost a year ago. Well worth it in my book. You get what you want, you have the satisfaction that you did it yourself, if your careful when you shop then you do save considerable money, what more could you ask for?

I'm estimating $35 per uq and I made 3 and still have most a King pillow and material left over, so that's not just the cost of the down pillow....that's cost broke up. It took me a year of trying on ebay and finally won a king set for a total of $55 including shipping. Like I said, it took a year and it was very frustrating to say the least, but I was diligent on it. Would love to win another set, but can't get any where near that price, but I still try.

That's what I'm talking about. I need to find some of those pillows as well. For me though, these 5 dollar down coats at Goodwill are a steal!

Alas, the Bloomingdale's My Luxe pillows may be a thing of the past. But HERE is 16 ounces of pure white duck down for 19 bucks PLUS you get a free pillow case with it!

That's better than I can find bulk down for. Buyer beware, of course.

P.S.: JBR: I also LOVE that lime green/gray combination. Looks great!
