    I always had a piece of hardware at the strap/hammock interface (ring buckles, elephant trunks etc) and that piece of hardware was always kept under the tarp. So if the strap became saturated or water ran down it, it would drip off the hardware before getting to the hammock, no drip string required.

    My. 02. Have never had whoopies myself but have seen lots of rigs with them. Whoopies: have to carry 6 - 8 feet x 2 of webbing plus toggles plus the whoopies and a bit longer minimum tree distance. Webbing and buckles: carry 15 feet x 2 of webbing, shorter minimum tree distance.
    Increase in weight is minimal and I have no problems folding my webbing up and into a largish ziplok that fits easily into my hammock sack.
