    Tarp guylines

I just got some new sil tarps and was reading about how to set them up. DO I need self tensions lines on each tieout or would just a couple work?

Each of the four corners (those staked to the ground) would work best in most cases. I then use this system from BushcraftNorthwest for the other tie outs.

I'd go all 4 if it were me.

Simplest tensioner is a loop of shock cord girth hitched to the tarp tieout and your guyout girth hitched to the piece of shock cord.

I did that on my last outing--figured if it didn't work out, or if I needed to bring the ends in to make doors there's still enough line left to tie them down. Worked great. I usually pitch in an A or porch mode anyhow, so it's super-quick. Self tensioners on the four points going to the ground. Otherwise, I've got a tensioner in anything that I'm staking to the ground.

I have a silnylon hex tarp and have a loop of shock cord on the two side tie-out on one side only and a loop on one end of the ridgeline. These have kept my tarp taut and it doesn't noticeably pull the tarp off center. Saves the weight of 3 more shock cord loops, but I'm a gram weenie.

I have tensioners on all of my perimeter tie-outs except the CRL connections. It works well for me, YMMV.

I may be the exception to the rule here:

I have a sil SF and have just removed the tarp tensioners from the corners. They were the surgical tubing type, I bought them from a company, I wont say which, but I felt like they never really worked.

My tarp never got saggy. Even in downpours. Now I do have a pole mod on it, and that may help. But every time it rained I would check the tensioners and they were always still maxed out in stretch.

I now have line loks on the guylines and they make tightening up the tarp way too easy.

Maybe the reason it never sagged is because the freaking humidity in Alabama already stretches it out?
