Ill throw in one more thing. When I bring friends here to hike and they come from sea level to our 8-10K trails, I always take them up on day hikes but bring them back down to 5K for the night. What I read and what I have found in practice is hike high, then sleep low for a night or two before going on an extended high trip.

    +1 on Mustardman's remarks.
When I 'scored' this park it looked obvious to me that day hikes were the way to go.
I did Hallet/Flattop/and for big fun Estes Cone.....then R&R in Estes Park where while sipping a beer I glanced outside and on the sidewalk was an elk

There was a big to-do a couple of years ago in Estes Park.
The local chamber of commerce funds feeding the elk and deer to keep them close to town.
The don't feed the wildlife peeps really took issues with it.
I believe the CC won and feeding continues.
