    straps

is there any reason why you shouldn't use a peace of amsteel for the straps to go around the tree?

Yes, there are several reasons not to. It can damage the inner layers of the tree, evidence of which may not be visible for some time. This can put off land managers and add to the number of parks, rec areas, forests, and other lands that have banned the use of hammocks. Using a 1" or wider strap helps to distribute the load and shows good leave no trace practices.

What about repeated use of straps on the same tree. Will that damage the tree?

I had taken this issue up with an employee from my local nursery (for plants) since I had been a rope user up until a couple months ago. He stated that anything tied around a tree will harm it over time. When a new tree is planted, you will usually see twine or rope with a piece of water hose or foam tube to protect the tree and help shape it. Those ropes will stay on a tree for the first year or two of its life. The only reason they aren't doing the tree any real harm is the arborist will regularly move the ropes, twine what have you. The water hose/foam tube is there to protect the bark of the tree from friction.

esog, welcome aboard. You have just learnt the first rule of Leave No Trace in hammock hanging. We want those trees to be there for future generations of hangers to utilize.
