Back when I was a lurker I read many threads regarding the novel ideas the folks at HF had for eliminating the "Hennessey Hitch" via Figure 9s (modified), Gaarda Hitches, homemade friction plate devices and such. Here is a loooooonnnnng thread just for nostalgia's sake.

That's a pretty cool thread!

I remember back in 1999 when I got a Clark Jungle hammock, the suspension was yellow, twisted polyethylene rope that was probably close to an inch thick. You're right, evolution is interesting. Makes you wonder what will happen in the next few years.

Just received another Traveler-I choose webbing this time thinking I wont use it either and will sub out to a whoopie.....but then decided to hang it via its webbing to kill a little time. It took me back to my original Speer 8.5, had to scratch the head for 2 seconds and ponder what those two metalic triangles on each webbing were for! and then it was suspended.
We have come a long way but have we reached the end of the bell shape curve where major leaps will only come very slowly now?
Every times I see something new come out (example Dutch Flyz) I get excited knowing there are thinkers out there not giving up on the most perfect mousetrap.

One of my entries for the new Hammock Forums motto was "Our ancestors descended from trees - we're going back!"

(Actually I liked my other one better, "Hammock Forums - We take loafing to a whole new level." Alas, neither one won out. I wonder why?)

One thing that hasn't changed much is the ripstop nylons we've been using. I can't help but wonder if that might be somewhere to look for further evolution?

I had no idea that the thread was the genesis of your "journey"! I just remember first reading it and thinking "Wow! There are a lot of folks who are tinkerers and futzers just like me!" Of course, I have limited facilities with which to work (drill press, table saw and hand tools) so I was reluctant to delve too deeply into the metal-working aspect of hammocking. And at the time I was focussing on making modifications and accessories for my canoes (working in ash and walnut).

Of course, now I am content to live with Dutch Clips, Tri-Glides and Tarp Flyz. Gives me more time to make sawdust!

that thread is classic, how many different pieces were made in that thread? at least 10 unique designs it seems like. that was really fun.
