Hammock hanging isn't the easiest thing in the world to do! I have been researching and looking around for quite awhile now and still think I do not have exactly want I want. I'm closer than I was 6 months ago but still have a ways to go. I still don't think I've had the "perfect" night in a hammock yet but I ain't given up yet! I still havent perfected the rain thing. I do not know of any one time in a tent that I or my gear got extremely wet. I'm still working out the bugs in that area with my hammock. I still haven't worked out my pad issues and I feel those are the reasons that I'm still on the ground for the most part.
easier than sleeping on the ground,my 2 sons are expert hangers,my yongest son started out hanging in the winter at the age of 9,his 1st hang was in the
30;s,his 2nd hang was low 20's,,with nothing but a 3/4 ultralite thermarest and a 30 degree bag and a fleece liner in a hennessey scout hammock.he sleep like a baby

I would agree with Goldbond. It is not the easiest thing to get into. First of all understanding what you want, and second figuring out how to use it. I just got a ENO double nest a few days ago and I'm surprised at how much I move around to get comfortable. Seems like any one position will last for a few minutes before something goes to sleep/gets numb and I have to shift. I'm not sure how anyone is able to get into a sleeping bag and roll over in the night. Sure I have 2 days experience and Im sure I will get better but there is a much larger learning curve to these and they tend to be heavier and more expensive than tents. One of the biggest arguments I have heard against tents is finding a level spot. I have about zero issue with this. Most backpacking tents are very small and you can find/clear an area for a tent in no time at all. As far as hammocks being more comfortable Im still working on that issue. I hike with a REI 3.5 pad which makes for some comfy nights on the ground. I threw it into my hammock yesterday and it would not lay flat. Seems like hammocks are a cool idea but has to be "your thing" to do it. I bought and ENO to see if I like hammocks. At this point I'm not sure if my new backpacking shelter will be a tent or a Clark hammock... Only time will tell
I say to each their own if you ask me. If a person is happy, set in their ways, comfortable or whatever else when they sleep on the ground then let them. Trying to push or pressure someone to convert to hammocking is like trying to get a smoker to quit before they're ready. They may try it, but ultimately they'll go back to their old ways. The fewer people who hammock means more trees for the rest of us.

In Colorado there are many hammock hanging sites, but not many with a view. I am not sure I want the competition. Let 'em sleep on the ground.I say to each their own if you ask me. Agreed! I love hiking and backpacking as well as kyacking/canoeing so I will always find a way to do those things. I love experimenting with differant facets of all of the above and when I find a so called "chink" in the armor I guess I want to know why. Why can't I do this hammock thing like everyone else. I think by trying new things I keep the excitement in my love for all these things. I just hate to be "defeated". Guess that comes from being a old Marine! I will figure the hammocking thing out...might take me a little longer than some...and if it don't kill me....I will get it right!I say to each their own if you ask me.
