    1,000 Pound Test Paracord

I was wondering if anyone uses it for their suspension systems or ridgelines? I've been using 550 cord and haven't had any problems out of it. I feel that I should upgrade to something stronger, and can't seem to find a place online that sells AMsteel blue for a decent price.

Paracord, even at a higher rating, is still made of nylon and designed to stretch. That's great for a lot of purposes, but not for static loads like sleeping in hammocks.

Redden Marine has Amsteel for .21/foot. I think they have a coupon code as well. Search the forum for that.

At $.21 a foot, Amsteel is pretty affordable. However, I was somewhat peeved with Redden Marine's shipping charges for my recent purchase of 60 foot of Amsteel ($12.60) and 180 ft. of 1.75 mm Zing-It ($20.96), for a subtotal of $33.56.

The cheapest option they offered for shipping was $11.05 amounting to approx. 1/3 the cost of the items I ordered! Subtract the Hammock Forums discount of $1.68, and I paid $42.93 total. I found the shipping costs somewhat outrageous. I've ordered several items from Redden Marine and never got gouged like this in the past on shipping charges.

I sent them an e-mail that they should offer more affordable shipping options, but received no reply.

I think that happened to me once (been a while, certainly over a year), but I called them up about the order. They were able to change the shipping by combining it all into a flat rate box, and they credited me for the difference.

It's a hassle to call, but they did right on the service.

West Marine will ship for free to any store, so if you have one located near you that's a possibilty, though they charge a bit more for Amsteel ($0.28/foot for 7/64). Could end up being cheaper depending upon how much you order.

It's probably only a matter of time till you do.

Quite a few members here have snapped 550, even using it in lower-stress applications than suspension use (ridgelines, etc). It's really only designed to be fully stretched a limited amount of times before the strength is derated.

I have nothing against 550...just be careful. It's really not advisable for suspension use.

I actually called three different times, got three different people, and got the same answer each time: $11.05 was the cheapest shipping they offered. Seems like they've eliminated flat rate shipping entirely. I'm not happy, and may have to turn to other sources for Amsteel/Zing-It if I'm going to be gouged on shipping charges like that.

No reason I should pay more than $6 for shipping on an order like mine.
