    Cute little whoopie slings.

So I made my dad a hammock and then he built himself a hammock stand to take camping. He's finished backpacking and now its truck camping. To work with his stand I made him two foot whoopies. They're cute, they're small, they're whoopies.

They do look cute but be careful, the buries for the fixed eye loops look a little small. If they are Brummel splices they'll probably hold but the manufacturers recommended bury length is somewhere around 6.5 inches-4.5 inches for the bury and around 2 inches for the taper.

Bubba speaks wisdom. The locked brummel part of the splice is just to prevent the bury from coming out when it's not under load. You still need to have the proper length of bury for the fixed splice to be secure. Last thing you want is for dad's back to meet the stand's crossbar. Be safe.

The bury for the adjustable loop is six inches long. The locked brummel bury isn't very long, just about an inch. So what I'm reading is that for the locked brummel I should make the bury longer so under a load the brummel doesn't fail?

That's correct. The constriction of the amsteel over itself is providing the strength so there should be over 6 inches of amsteel buried after the brummel with 2 inches being tapered to create a gradual change in diametre when loaded. Having said that, I have made whoopie slings with fixed eye buries as short as 4 and half inches with no issues but there is always a risk when you don't follow guidelines. At the very least I think 1 inch is too short especially if they are for someone else. Also, the manufacturer recommends at least 8 inches for the adjustable bury.

I would imagine that a couple of stiches through the bury would alleviate this problem?

How? It's the length of the bury that provides the strength. Stitches (or a brummell) are only used to prevent a bury from accidentally sliding out when handling the rope.

having made a few of these whoopies and also used a lock brummell on them, I too don't see how stitching would make a really short bury any safer. I've used as short as 5" for the locked brummell and it's worked out well. I usually use about 8 to 10 inches for the adjustable side. And I like to still have a stopper knot on the end of the rope that's going into the adjustable bury part. After the knot, I'll back feed the excess inside the amsteel. It makes the rope pretty and it wont accidently slip back inside your adjustable bury part of the whoopie.

This advice is really appreicated. I did not know the necessity if the longer bury for the Brummell. I'll get those back and fix them. I also have to fix mine as well!

The brummel is locked, that's what makes it hold. An inch of bury isn't enough to be safe, but stitching it should be adequate to fix that IMHO. How's it going to come apart??

The 6" bury on the whoopie is more what I'd be concerned about. I start with 12" to get a 10" bury.

Remember Pap, the recommendations on bury lengths are based on the diameter of the cordage and the load, not on the overall length of the whoopie. Overall, I don't think I'd hang from these.
