So, I thought I'd tweak the design a little bit.

You'll see I've shortened the tarp to 11' x 8', (5'6" wide at the edge.) This makes it a little wider too and gets my diagonal seam up to 9'8", which adds interesting options for hanging it.

The finished sides end up at 4'6" in width so prior to assembly I should be able to get what I need out of 62" wide sil. (give or take an inch...)

This design requires 18' of fabric or so, so 6 yds. Still better than 9 yds...

    EDIT: Unless it doesn't work!

could you roll some 1/4" or 1/2" twill tape in your seam?

I could but I'm getting more confident that a flat felled seam will be sufficient.

Need to experiment some more though...

I'm definitely in the no tape, plain flat felled seam camp. I think any reinforcing beyond the multiple layers the seam provides, would just cause problems.

Good. Thanks. I don't really know what I'm doing and all input is appreciated...

I'm looking forward to the results of this! Let us know when you're done. If it works, I'll be making a hex tarp for my son!

Just a quick thought but wouldnt having the tarp going with the bias or against. Still not sure about that. The stretchy direction be beneficial since u could setup the tarp very tight and as the tarp "relaxes" during the night it would sort of be self tensioning???

The way this is turning out I think I'll have the option of hanging it with the seam on the ridgeline or with the seam diagonal. I think I'm gonna find that out...

That seems unnecessary, but it's your nomination.

I liked this idea too much so I went ahead and started sewing one up last night. I still have to hem it, add tieouts, and some DIY waterproofing, so no hang report for a while, but the layout and sewing so far has been pretty simple.

I had some calendered 1.1oz ripstop that was 63" wide, so I took 3x that for the length to start with (5'3"x15'9"). I measured to a point 5'3" along one side, and double that (10'6") on the other, and made a straight cut between them. I then matched up the two 10'6" selvege edges and sewed a flat felled seam. Dimensions at this point are ~7'5" x 14'9" with a length of 7'5" at the tarp edges. I expect to lose 1"-2" from those measurments as I hem the edges.

Having plunged in this far I'll be whipping up a batch of silicone/mineral spirits to see if I can't get it waterproof after I hem it up. It should be fun over the next evening or two playing with this thing to finish it. If it works I have another 15' or so of fabric to make another one.

    Wish me luck.

    -Mike
