I always pass the largest knitting needle first to open up line, large or small. It takes only seconds to pass it like a catheter. Maintain the opening and the bury passes more easily.
The aluminum needles cost just $1 at Walmart or similar.
I don't see reference to that practice in current threads on splicing.
It also is not be obvious to noobs whether people are pushing or pulling the bury. Two different approaches.
