Open the line with knitting needles first?

I always pass the largest knitting needle first to open up line, large or small. It takes only seconds to pass it like a catheter. Maintain the opening and the bury passes more easily.

The aluminum needles cost just $1 at Walmart or similar.

I don't see reference to that practice in current threads on splicing.

It also is not be obvious to noobs whether people are pushing or pulling the bury. Two different approaches.

The most recent reel of zing-it I bought seems to be woven tighter than my last reel and I had. I was having great trouble burying it. As soon as it doubled over I was unable to pull it through the threads. Two thicknesses of cord would not pass inside the cord.

What I did to get over this was wrap the end of the cord in a small piece of cellotape/scotchtape. The tape was half overlapping with the cord to attach it and the other half I twisted together. I was able grab the twisted end of the tape with my splicing tool and pull a single width of cord through without fraying, getting stuck or getting blisters.

Thanks. That would explain my issue. I was burying one end, not both. Doh!

I'll pick up on this thread with a question instead of starting a new one.

So, I'll admit choosing 1.75 mm Zing-It as my first attempt at splicing in 20 years since I was a Scout was ambitious, but I've do have it figured out. My fingers are sore!

Question concerns the table Angry Sparrow mentions in the thread. If I'm splicing a locked brummel for a guy line, how long should my bury be?

    Thanks in advance!

Bury length is 2.fids for a locked brummel, 3 for an adjustable bury, a Fid is the diameter x 21...

at least that's what the Samson folks say...

    so for 1.75mm line, it's 1.75*21*2= 73.5mm = 2.9 in Is that right?

Thin piano wire bent in half once. No blisters, makes splicing zing it and lash it a cake walk. It is the strongest wire I have found at such a small diameter.

Having not done this in years it was a little frustrating last night. Today I'm knocking out guy lines in minutes. I am tapering the bury, using floral wire to open the channel and CAT-5 to pull the bury back through.

Thanks for all the help! When I'm done with this 1.75 mm I'll be able to do Amsteel 7/64 blindfolded!!!

One trick that helps whether you taper or not is to turn the tail back towards the standing part so it helps shoehorn it in. Kinda like a funnel.
    This is a huge help.

Oh... 1 more tip... I have a 1/4" dowel sharpened like a pencil and sanded smooth... works great to pre- open holes for passing thorough. , like when making locked brummels.
