I can't comment on the strength of 2x2's, but because I already had some 2x3's I made my stand with them. It is SOLID. I don't weigh 300, but close enough. I expect I would trust it if I were a good bit heavier.

That would be great if you could get the inside scoop!

i went with the larger fender washers that are about as wide as the 2x2s. i did use some smaller washers to begin with but when i tightened the nuts down the washers sunk into the wood. i found that with the bigger washers the legs were less prone to moving (swinging side to side) after i put them where i wanted.

With 2x2's or 2x3's, be mindful of the grain, you don't want a piece that has run out. You want the grain lines to run from one end to the other, |||| instead of running across the piece at an angle. |\\\|. Small, solid knots shouldn't be an issue, any piece that has a knot on the edge or larger than a nickel should be rejected.

I did the same as Shortbus. The fender washers worked better for me.

Thanks Aven. It's always beneficial to hear from someone that knows what they are doing!

Short grain breaks easier when flexed and bouncing is no fun. Been there, didn't enjoy it.

Thanks for the headsup Aven. Something that hasn't been brought up before but is definitely important. One reason I ended up with C fir. Nothing else in the racks was acceptable.

Is there any reason that it wouldnt work to use one of these tripods without the post with a lone tree?

Spoke with my friend at work. It turns out that she stayed at the ranger's personal residence, not in the park campground proper. It just happened to be right next door, from what she told me.

    Sorry about that.
