Tina, you forgot to mention the "chiggers" or red bugs, they were worse than the ticks.

For day hikes I have never had any problems leaving my vehicles at any of the 3 parking areas. For overnights I take my 20 year old beater truck so if someone does decide to break into it, no big deal. While I do not know of any one having problems with car break ins, I have heard 2nd hand accounts of break ins but nothing official. When you camped at the North end, did you have any worries about parking your vehical at that end of the trail?? Last year when I was out there, we did a shuttle type run where we parked one vehical at the North end and one at the South end. We just wasn't real crazy about leaving the car at the North end though.
My son and I just got back from a very short hike on the trail this AM. Even after spraying down with bug juice, the deer flies and mosquitoes were so bad we turned around and stoped the hike. Thats the big problem with the trail in the summer, the bugs. Have to wait for a frost or cooler weather.
I have reported the water pump problem to the Cateret Wildlif Club as they maintain the water pumps.
TinaLouise, le me know next time you are up in the area for a hike or overnight. Are you going to Hot Spings ?

I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
Only problem with parking along the shoulders of Hwy 101 is that many spots are very soft and you can stuck in the dirt.I've seen people pull over on 101 and park on the side of the road at the trail crossing.
