What's the best way to clean a hammock? I was inspecting one of my GT Ultralights and notice two spots that look and feel like oil. I had this hammock hanging in the basement and suspect my son was eating something oily while laying in the hammock.
I also noticed a stretch mark in the hammock, should I be worried?

If you can - spot clean with some mild soap and warm water. Otherwise, I just hand wash in the sink or tub with warm water and hand dry.

+1 for hand wash. I just put mine in a bucket with some sport wash, hand scrunch it around to make some suds and rinse 2 or 3 times. I use warm water - not hot. Hang it outside and it will dry. Ta-da!
Don't know about the stretch marks - can you post a picture?

Well that was nasty. I hand washed the hammock in warm water with a mild laundry detergent, rinsed and hung it to dry. I never realized just how much dirt a hammock can accumulate. On a good note it was dry in only a few ours.

Years ago Consumers Reports suggested using Dawn for soak-washing sweaters (worked as well or better than Woolite). I just fill a 5-gal bucket with warm water, add Dawn, add hammock, hand agitate, and leave overnight. Rinse several times (CR said Dawn rinses very effectively) and hang to dry. QED!

We've washed HH hammocks in our front loader machine several times. Delicate setting with a mild detergent. No problems. Actually it helps the zipper work better by getting the debris out of it.

My HH was washed in a FRONT Loader. I go to the coin op laundry and use their larger size washer. I do hang to dry. So far everything is okay.
In my experience if things are kept reasonably clean they last longer, work better and look nicer. Dirt and dust rub against the fibers, causing wear and tear. Skin oil, dirt or dust all add up to extra wear and tear on the fabric.
My DIY every night hammock gets thrown in the washing machine along with blanket and sheet weekly. The DIY hiker gets the same treatment at the end of the season. Nothing special.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
