    Angry Mayan ruins

I got a mayan hammock at the Humane Society thrift sale this weekend (I paid a whole dollar for it!)

Now, that I've set it up, let me ask you this:

HOW THE HECK DO YOU LAY IN THESE THINGS?!?!?!?! I literally couldn't get in it for the first half hour. OK, I figured out I had WAAAY too much sag in it the first time I hung it. I tightened it up a bit and tried to lay in it side to side. Forget about it. I can BARELY manage to lay in it on a diagonal, but it's dicey at best. Getting out is another comedy of errors in itself.

I googled pictures of mayan hammocks and everybody looks so comfortable--side to side or end to end.

What the heck am I doing wrong? I've never had a woven hammock before... .

It would help to have a video of these shenanigans...er...experiences to diagnose the problem.

    Hmmmm.

My only guess that you got what you paid for.
I have a couple of low-end Mayans that aren't comfortable, no matter what I do. The others I tend to just melt into with varying levels of ease.

It should be long, like at least 14' long.

Have you hooked a toe getting out yet? That one is always fun. Especially bad when you're trying to get out of the hammock in a hurry from a dead sleep. Almost makes me wish I had a security camera setup in the bedroom.

Best get it done before December 21, their calendar ends and we will all fly off the face of the earth. Won't need a hammock.

Does it have really large 'holes' in the weave?

I generally refer to those as the Mexican Hammocks because I see more of them sold by the vendors in Mexico than anything else. Usually have a thick rope/cord weave with holes in the weave large enough to get your hand through. My experience with those hammocks have been very hit and miss. I haven't figured-out exactly what to look for in them yet.

Time for another trip to a Mexican beach...for research.

Yeah, you'd like that, wouldn't you?

That's about right! I think I've gotten about a dollar's worth of fun out of it. I'm about to put it away and donate it to next year's thrift sale!

    It's not. It's a little over 12 feet.

Now THAT's funny! No, haven't done that yet. More to look forward to.

No, it's a really tight weave of fine cotton cordage. It stretches like a dang accordion and springs back so fast I can't even get in it most of the time. Let us know what your Mexican beach investigation turns up!

My friend had one similar to what you're describing when we were growing up. I was thinking back on it the other day, actually, and thought what a spreader bar might have done to make it easier to talk to.

This might actually be a hopeful sign...maybe.

Having slept in a great number of cotton hammocks indoors and out, I've also washed almost as many. From Mayan to Brazilian, when washed they all shrink like crazy. I line dry my cotton hammocks, which helps, but not that much. Since you purchased it at a thrift shop, it's a safe bet it was washed. If it was put in the dryer (probably was) it will be even worse.

Here is the good news: cotton stretches back out.
The catch is that it requires a significant amount of time. When I wash my Brazilians and rehang them, the edge that is normally at about knee level, is above my shoulders. First time I did it, I swear I wept a little. Climbed in and wasn't terribly comfortable, but good enough to sleep. By morning, it had stretched back out to within probably 20-30% of normal. Within three days, it was back like nothing had happened.

My Mayans stretch too, but they seem to spring back after a single night. Might be worth a shot to spend a few hours in it and see if it expands any. Or, ya know, it's just a $1 hammock.

Just a thought, instead of just waiting for you to have an uncomfortable night trying to stretch it out, do you have someplace you can hang it and leave it hung for a couple of days? Load it up with heavy stuff... bowling balls, sacks of feed, your supply of paracord and biners, half of your collection of books on knots... and leave it hung under pressure for a few days. Voila! Stretched hammock!

I figured we will still need our hammocks. While the ground dwellers are floating away, we can switch to the bottom of the hammocks and look "up" at the ground.
