    HH double bottom mod

We've had quite a few requests to mod HH's with a bottom for CCF pads.

Since we've never done it, we're not sure what's all involved in the process. So we come to the forum for answers!! This might be a service we could offer, but we need to understand the issues first. Any thoughts for us? I'd be glad to hear them.

What comes to my mind are questions like these:

What is the best material to make the bottom out of. Should we get HH material or does it really not matter since it is not a weight bearing issue? Should the material be waterproof or just DWR?

The dimensions of the bottom pocket. How many different patterns would we need to fit various HH hammock models?

What about pockets for arm pads? What dimensions would best suit?

The layout in a HH is left to right, so the pad pocket would have to follow that line. What about the area below the slit patch for your legs. Could a pocket be made for that also? What do other hammock makers with pad pockets do?

Thanks for any and all feedback.

Mainly, they don't have bottom entry... The second layer is the same as the first layer. You could do this easily when you do the zipper front, but I don't see it working with the bottom entry.

I was wondering if anyone would use just a torso pad CCF...one that would stop at the HH slit patch. This way the slit could still be utilized.

I suppose another option is to mod the HH with a zipper, sew the slit closed and add a full bottom.

How about a three pocket pad sleeve.?? One large one for the main body and two smaller ones to wrap the sides of the bottom entry?? Would still allow the the entry to function and give insulation for your legs.

You know, the way I lay in my HH, my legs are only on the right side of slit. Would you even need one for the left side?

Actually there is enough material in most HH tarps to make a bottom sleeve, provided of course you have another tarp to use. I made a sleeve out of my HULBA tarp. It hangs underneath. Not enough sewing capability to figure out how to have cut and sewn directly to the HULBA. It turned out 28" W by 82"L . Search my posts if you want to see pics.

I already have Mod # 3, so I don't use the bottom entry.

I would be happy if you figure this out because it would be a lot simpler than my "experiment". Another great idea for you to solve>

When you start doing this modification, count me in. I'll be sending you an explorer ultralight.

From the discussions above, it seems like you should consider multiple options as you did with the zipper mod. Based on that success, I'm sure you are just the folkss to figure this out. When you have the design for the HH Explorer with zipper mod ready, let me know!
