I can relate my friend. All the time spent on this forum is just my way of compensating for not being able to get out there. Hope you find the time soon to enjoy the trail again.

The beach of one of those uninhabited Barrier islands in the next couple of months, before the Humidity rolls in would be one of the best ever. Your so close, almost there. They even say there's treasure there, I believe it maybe the Islands beauty.

Gnome, which barrier islands are you talking about? Do you know anything about little tybee island off the coast of Ga?

This is taken off the New Georgia Encyclopedia Web page. I have a Touring Kayak so they are accessible, have been to Tybee, Jekyll and Skidaway Islands. check out state land and state park websites. I watched a Georgia PBS Special once that was very informative on the Islands. Reserch, Investigate, Explore and Keep us posted.

meets the Atlantic Ocean along the sandy beaches of the present-day barrier islands, known as the Sea Islands or the Golden Isles. Scientists refer to them as barrier islands because they form a barrier between the sea and the land. The current configuration of Georgia's shoreline is only the most recent in a long series of changing shorelines.
The islands are composed basically of dune and beach-ridge sands. They were shaped—and are still being altered—by wind, waves, currents, tides, and a slowly rising or stable sea level. From north to south along Georgia's 100-mile-long coast, the barrier islands are Tybee, Little Tybee, Ossabaw, Wassaw, St. Catherines, Sapelo, Wolf, Blackbeard, Sea, St. Simons, Little St. Simons, Jekyll, Little Cumberland, and Cumberland. (Skidaway Island, near Savannah, is said to be an inshore barrier island. It lacks the wide, sandy beach typical of Georgia's outer barrier islands.)
Separated from the mainland by a four- to six-mile-wide band of salt marsh, tidal creeks, and estuaries, Georgia's barrier islands are under various types of ownership and management.
Jekyll, Sea Island, St. Simons, and Tybee islands are developed and connected to the mainland by bridges and causeways. Much of Jekyll is a state park.
The other barrier islands are accessible only by boat. Of these, Blackbeard, Wassaw, and Wolf islands are national wildlife refuges. Little Tybee, Ossabaw, and Sapelo are owned by the state of Georgia.
Cumberland Island
The Cumberland Island National Seashore is managed by the National Park Service. Little Cumberland, Little St. Simons, and St. Catherines are privately owned.

I know all cumberland has on it is a welcome center, a main dirt road, and three or so campsites. It has wild horses and what not. No fires on cumberland though and you have to take a 17 dollar ferry ride to get there.
as for little tybee, supposely their is nothing on their other then maybe a few trails. I've read that you can only get there by boat or kayak but my brother was saying you can walk there during low tide. Their is a 10 part series some one did on little tybee on youtube if you just type in little tybee
