    Easy second layer?

I'm headed to the Boundary Waters in August, where it will be buggy. It also can be warm or chilly. I am a newbie, with a new Byers mosquito, and a ccf pad, which I plan to use with a sleeping bag in the hammock (probably). I am concerned about bugs biting through the hammock, and the colder nights. So I'm wondering if I can make a cheap and easy underlayer that will help. What if i buy some ripstop and rig it as an underlayer (no sewing, please)? Will it work, and how can i do it? This seems preferable to the extra weight of an underquilt.

If you bring a poncho for your rain gear, you can use that.

I've been in some of the worst biting insect country as a backpacker, but moreso as a canoer... I'll carry or portage an extra few pounds if it means 99% less bugs.

I've got a Byer and mosquitoes eat me alive through the hammock or bugnet fabric if I happen to rest a body part on them. I think treating the hammock/bug net with permethrin is your only obvious solution. Not worth the time or money trying to modify a Byer, in my opinion.

The pad will help, but as soon as your arm rests on the bugnet or hammock fabric, you will be ravaged without permethrin. And God forbid it's your face that rests against the hammock fabric. I woke up with an eye swollen shut after one such incident.

Permethrin may be very useful to you here. I camp year-round down here in Florida, and some of the places I camp are fairly near stagnant water (well, actually, most of them are). With an application of Permethrin to my Hennessy, I've never had an issue with being bitten through the single layer bottom.

    YMMV, though.

I have no problem using Permethrin, though i think it's better at killing than repelling. But I sort of like the idea of moving the pad between layers.

Is the Byers worse than other hammocks for bugs?

Permethrin will do the job nicely. I used it last year with no problems

Hrm...no sewing, you said? It might be worth just bringing a sheet or something into the hammock with you to go over the pad. Sorry that I don't have a better idea.
