    Would Like To Hang Around

I'm into the bushcraft life style and want to do some camping but not on the ground. I need to learn all I can about hammocks, looks like this is the place. Just want to say thanks for this forum and all the information that is being shared here...OT

Welcome from Denver! Check out Shugs videos on YouTube and The Ultimate Hang book by Derek. Both are fantastic starting points.

Welcome to the forums from Indiana!
I got in a fight one time with a really big guy, and he said, "I'm going to mop the floor with your face." I said, "You'll be sorry." He said, "Oh, yeah? Why?" I said, "Well, you won't be able to get into the corners very well."

    four things you'll need:
    1) a tarp. This is actually the shelter bit.
    2) Tree straps. these are so important- 1 inch at least wide, used to attach hammock to the tree (with whatever bits of suspension you want in between) Some people claim you don't need them- don't listen, unless you're talking about trees that are on your property.
    3) A Hammock (so you don't have to suspend yourself from the straps... )
    4) INSULATION for both your top AND bottom. (so you don't get cold)

    Optional:
A bug net (this one might be the 5th essential, depending on where you live), fancy suspension (make it easy to put up), ridgeline (sag fixer or someplace to hang stuff or to keep the net off your face) some way of storing the hammock (a bag, a sack that is attached, lazy slug tube, snake skins, etc) some way of storing gear whilst you are hanging (gear hammock, peak bag, ridgeline organiser) and the list goes on.

    TH
my hammock gear weights total: 2430g (~86oz)
    Winter: total 2521 (~89oz)
(see my profile for detailed weights)

    gram counter, not gram weenie!

Welcome from Georgia, and don't let yourself get intimidated by all the information out there. Things are really very simple, its just that there are so many different ways to do things. Pick out some and try them, if they work for you great, if not try something else. This is often one of the most fun things to do, trying different ways, and sometimes a new hanger comes along and sees a totally new way, shares it, and we all get to try something new. Happy hanging.
