What size thread for locking the bury in amsteel eye splice?

I apologize for this question. I am positive this has been asked before. I am pretty sure that I have even seen it but I have searched every way I can think of but can’t find anything. I bought some 3/16 amsteel and I am going to make my first attempt at making whoopie slings. I assume bigger thread for locking the eye splice is better? Also assuming synthetic is better. Nylon maybe? Someone direct me to the thread (pun intended) that I know must exist.

Those will be some really heavy-duty whoopies!

I've spliced 7/64 and 2.2mm whoopies and never locked the eye splice with thread. Is that only necessary on larger diameter lines?

I know it’s kind of big. Bad eyes and not stellar coordination make me want to try bigger line first. You should hear me cuss when I go fly fishing! If I decide to go smaller it will give me an excuse to make more. I have no idea if it is really necessary. I am going off videos. I guess a Brummell knot gets me to the same place but I was going to be a little lazy if possible.

I've seen it done that way, though I've never done it myself. If you use thread to lock the splice, the thread is what is mechanically bearing the load as opposed to the actual amsteel on the brummel. The locked brummel is super easy. I'm all thumbs and once I did it twice I could just about do it with my eyes closed. Try getting a couple of pieces of floral wire from wally world to pull the bury through and you'll be fine.

Ugh, you are going to force me to learn an additional skill. Did I mention I am lazy? I will do it but it will involve significant grumbling.

I've spliced bunches of whoopie slings and UCR's, this http://www.samsonrope.com/Documents/...l-Blue_WEB.pdf is all I've ever used, no thread necessary. Take a look at the Samson rope website for more info, unless that's too much trouble....

As long as the bury is the correct size, the thread has no bearing (like that pun?) on the eye strength. The only thing that the thread is used for is to make sure the bury doesn't slip when there is no load. Use any synthetic thread to keep it from soaking in water and molding.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

What size thread for locking the bury in amsteel eye splice?

You might like a locked brummel to begin your eye splice.
That is the way it's done by most all the pros who make hundreds of whoopie slings.
There is no reason why you can't use thread stitched through bury to stabilize eye splice. The thread stitching keeps the bury from accidentally sliding apart when there is no pressure on amsteel. While hanging in your hammock, the amsteel bury constricts and holds without aid of sewn stitches.
Lots of videos on splicing and always someone at a local hang to share their splicing ideas.
I'd use large diameter thread or what ever I had.
    Good Luck

    What he said.

And I guess to answer the original question, I like polyester upholstery thread. Then again, I don't see any reason you couldn't sacrifice a piece of the amsteel and unravel some individual threads and use them to stitch. Hmmm. Interesting thought, actually.

Yeah, I didn’t really think about it but the whole point of using hollow core rope is the ability to make it constrict on itself. Any old synthetic thread will keep it in place. Thanks to all who explained that one to me. I was going to use stitches this time and learn Brummells later but Hiker Bro and Phantom Grapplerhave me thinking about it. I tell people who are new to sailing all the time not to be intimidated by knots. Guess I should take my own advice.
