Good question. I've always wondered why folks here are all about shock cord, but never elastic. (e.g., Knotty's shock cord mod). I think it would be lighter and simpler. But you'd loose the adjustability that shock cord gives you.

Let us know if you do it!

Tell you what I'd like to see is elastic across the underquilt (side to side) to close up any dead spaces. Kind of like what Montbell does with the Stretch Hugger sleeping bag.

Did my very first UQ with the elastic up against the hammock per these UQ directions....http://thru-hiker.com/projects/down_underquilt.php
It worked but was tricky to sew so as not to compress the down.

Elastic wears out quickly and becomes limp, whereas shock cord lasts a long, long time.

Yep I did shock cord on mine. Only problem is I made it so heavy it will only be used for car camping.
