    FOUND: knife and Firesteel

I am looking for a camp-knife and Firesteel (flint?) combo. I do not need anything of Rambo-like proportions but a good multi-use around-camp knife (with the flint to start my fires with would be nice).

I don't know anything about holsters vs around the neck vs whatever. I also don't know anything about different styles, so I will put my trust in the group.

I am willing to pay upto $120. Once again trusting the group not to sell me a butter-knife for $100+.

    =)

At that price tag, you'd be wise to look into Rat Cutlery - I recommend an RC-4 for all around camp use (stay away from Ontario Knives RAT versions of this same knife). You can find it for just under $100 and this way you get the lifetime guarantee. A firesteel is pretty cheap at GoingGear.com.

Or, if you want to save even more money the Seal Pup Elite is a good blade and can be had at about $60.00 at Amazon.com. It's really light, but awfully durable, which is why I chose that one for backpacking.

Still, my first choice would be the RC-4.

On the advice of Forum members and a bit of research I just bought the RC-3

    http://www.the-knife-connection.com/rc-3pm-od.html

Im not gonna lie, I dont know much (actually nothing) about knives but the little ive read about but I got to hold this knife a few weekend ago and instantly feel in love with it. Great balance, good grip, handle fits the length of my big hand. Strong enough to be a survival knife but not to heavy. But read through the below thread here on HF it has some good tips and tid bits of info, happy hunting

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

I have an Ontario RAT-3 that I'd be willing to let go, or you can buy my RAT Cutlery RC-5 for 90 bucks. It;'s not a back packing knife, by any means, but you won't break it...cause I can't break it. Even if you do, it's got a lifetime warranty on it against any damage other than normal wear and tear.

If that picture comes up, that's both of them.

I recommend that you take sclittlefield's advice on the rc-4, it not really that bad of a price and the knife connection is a good company to deal with. You don't get the molle back but truthfully there not that useful unless you are into molle webbing.

Get yourself a Frost Mora knife, any of them really. They are low cost, quality knives. They are about tops in value for dollar category. Lee Valley has one for $17.50 CAD. Buy a few if you need too. Can never have too many knives.

For your flint, head over to firesteel.com and get yourself the Armageddon with Scraper and Lanyard. It will ship to you in Canada for less than $20. I bought this exact item and I really like it.

    Cheers

    Brian
