    Underquilt Edge Finishing

    Hey All,

After suffering a bit of a chill on a recent hike with my 3/4 length UQ, I've realized I seem to be sleeping a bit colder than I used to. At the encouragement of a few locals, I'm going to try my hand at making a full-length UQ. I'm pretty set on the steps, but have a question re: edge finishing.

As a bit of backgorund, I'm planning on running a shock cord channel up both sides using 1-1/2" grossgrain. The shell matrial will be 1.1 ripstop. I know I need to finish the edges in some manner to avoid fraying, and that typically I would roll hem the edges to do this. Question is, do I need to roll hem the edges since I'm using the grossgrain, or is the grossgrain enough to avoid fraying?

Sorry for the long post - hope this is clear.

    Thanks!

    Norm

The grosgrain provide a nicely finished edge which hides the ugly insides. In my understanding, no need to do a rolled hem. Sew the edges, trim the excess, add the grosgrain.

Oh wait. I forgot- I don't know how to sew. Better wait for someone with ACTUAL EXPERIENCE to chime in!

On the quilt I built, I just heat sealed the edges of the nylon(I sew one line of stitching to hold the nylon together) then put the grosgrain on.

Also, I was going to comment that a 3/4 length underquilt can be just as warm as a full length with the proper additional insulation under your feet. I know Shug only uses a 1/2 to 3/4 length UQ and he camps in some of the coldest temps of anyone here. I personally prefer a full length because of not having to fool with a pad inside under my feet and I find the shockcord on the ends uncomforatble on my head and feet on 3/4 lengths.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think I'll likely just heat seal the ends and finish with grossgrain. We'll see.

I "cut" my ripstop using a cheap soldering iron alongside a long metal ruler (w/scrap wood underneath). Almost a perfectly straight line and heat seals the ripstop edge as you go ! Super easy.

Then you just wrap the Grosgrain around the 4 edges and sew.

I've seen a stitch line close to the edge of a cut edge on 1.1 oz help pull the edge apart, fray, and lose the stitch edge in spots. If you weren't going to cut with a hot knife or otherwise heat seal the edge, I'd fold it over under the grosgrain to forestall that.

But I think it is enough to cut the edge with a hot knife, which is what I did on a recent project where the fabric edge was to disappear into a folded over ribbon.

Hadn't thought of the "hot cut" method.

A soldering iron is an interesting option.

Grizz - stupid question, but how do you prepare a hot knife?

A rolled hem would be lighter than grosgrain edges if that's a concern for you.
