    Custom Cutting some pads

I just ordered 2 sheets of foam, one piece 72"x40"x1/4" and the other 72"x40"x3/8" minicell foam, from these guys http://www.closedcellfoams.com/minicel.html
and got it a few days ago. I also picked up a cheap hotknife. I had hoped to create two pads with wings for shoulders and hips, and have the option to layer them together or use them separately for insulation. Brandon suggests this as an option on the WBBB site. I have a 1.1 dbl WB (god I love that thing), and hope to put pads in between layers.

What I'm looking for is guidance in shape and sizing for minimum weight, maximum coverage and what comfort can be achieved. I've seen a ton of good ideas in various parts, but no real 'best' shape.

I was thinking a coffin shape with wings for side coverage.

    Any input?

    Thanks,

    Stahl

I wish I knew something about pads that I could share... but I don't.
Your design looks good to me.

I don't use a pad, but I like the design.. I might just round the area from the shoulders to the top of the head.

You could re-draw your design in the middle of the foam, cut it really big (like 3" around the outer mark) and try it. Keep cuttng it smaller until it;'s how you like it...

You can't really make it bigger....

    Well put

Heh, yep, easy to cut it, impossible to put it back together. I was thinking I could cut a little longer along the side, where my hip would be. It's already overengineered so that I'm pretty sure it'll be big enough to trim later.
I can't believe I'm scared to start hacking on 35$ foam.

    Thanks for the observations,

    Stahl

You might start by laying on it and putting a rough outline of your body on it to give you an idea if it's gonna fit right.
Something to keep in mind is the curvature of the hammock. For me, it's generally greatest under my butt.

Put the foam in the hammock and lay on it. When I finally got around to cutting mine it was asymetrical. If you think about it your feet are over on the right side. I can take a picture tonight if you want.

    Ridiculous as it is...

I'm in a newish neighborhood with no trees yet, and I haven't put the time in to build a hammock stand.
I'm very interested in your shaping, as I can definitely see the possible value of an asymetric cut, but without a hammock to put it in, I couldn't figure out how it would be shaped.
If it wouldn't be too much trouble, snap a pic of your pad? That'd help a lot!
    Thanks!

I recently finished a double layer and I like this design. wouldn't the coffin shape lay asym just like the body? Can't wait to hear how it turns out.

    Here's the (crappy) finished product...

Regrettably, the hotknife I got wouldn't cut the foam, so I used some kitchen shears. I may have to trim up the edges later, but I'm not sure if it's really important or not. I plan to make a nylon bag for the pads, when I can find some nylon thread.
I will test these out in April at Bear Trap Canyon. Expected lows are around 30*, and I will pack both of them for the initial test. Hopefully, later in the summer, I can dispense with one or the other pad and just use the minimum necessary.

    Any feedback appreciated!
