    DIY tarp waterproofing

I'm making myog tarp out of Walmart ripstop nylon. I need to know the best way to waterproof it. Ive seen the videos of the silicon and mineral spirits, ive also seen the camp dry spray. Any suggestions on the best and most effective way to waterproof my tarp?

    Thanks in advance.

To properly saturate your tarp with Campmor or spray silicone, it's going to take a lot to soak it through all over completely. I'd still rate that stuff as more DWR than waterproof.

Have you actually started on your tarp project, or is it still in the planning stages?

the panels have been cut and the edge hems will be sewn this week. once the edges are sewn, the two ridge edges will be sewn together and sandwiched between 7/8" grosgrain ribbon for the ridgeline.

i plan to make the tarp first, and then waterproof it.

I used the silicone caulk and mineral spirits. I've used it for over a year and just added a second application for the Sherpa Hang this past weekend. It rained very hard for over an hour and had no water penetration.

Mainly, try to make sure you have plenty of mix for the size of your tarp and soak thoroughly. Also, understand the weight of the DIY sil-tarp will be more than a tarp made from silnylon material. Hang your wet tarp out of direct sun and use a squeegee to smooth out and remove excess sil-mix.

For me, I will use silnylon material for my next tarp instead of DIY sil. I really do like my tarp and I'm glad I had the experience of making it.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
