I don't think the are tie-outs exactly where you would want them to be to do this. (You might have to move the tie-outs down to the corner of the seam.)

I thought about that too, it would give you some (minimal) wind protection from one side or the other... I was thinking though that with the triangles cut loose, I could tie them on wherever I needed some extra protection. If that means tying them back on to where they came from, then that's an option as well.

With the hex shape, there are a lot of different configurations you can make with loose triangles... (i.e. tying them both on the windward side, end-caps, etc.) they wouldn't be completely wind-proof or rain proof, but it could help in a pinch.

Yep, I was pretty much thinking and wondering out loud.
The idea of the hammock tents came to mind...

NCPatrick, how far from the tie out did you cut?

The only thing I cut was from right under the side seams all the way across. It just so happened that the middle side tie-outs were above that seam (sewn into it), so they got to stay... that worked out well.

    Found one!

No rumor, just as soon as it arrives I'll be cutting & sewing.

The plan is to make the ridgeline the same length as my 9X9 & then Cat cut to the 2 tie points near the 2 corners. I'll then likely add GrosseGrain (sic) tape to the edges & as tie out points. I think I'll get better coverage than what I have with the 9x9, which I modified by cutting the corners off. I like the modification*, & will likely use this tarp for summer, the 12x12 modified for winter.

Yes, I could make a sil nylon tarp. I just like the camo & not having to sew lapped seams. I can sew them, just don't like to. For pics: Hopefully I'll make the Mt Rogers campout & someone will have a camera & can post them.

would it work to remove the triangles (leaving no cat cut) and being able to use the triangles for the ends or the sides? or would all the velcro (or omni tape) in the world not be strong enough for the forces?

I'm not sure about the strength of omni tape or velcro, but I'm planning to just tie the triangles where I need them. I sewed some tie-outs to the corners of the triangles. I can tie tie-outs to tie-outs, or stake the corners out to the ground, or whatever seems to work the best.

For an end cap, I'm gonna try running the original triangle corner tie-out up over the hammock suspension webbing up to the buckle, then attach the bottom two corners where it makes the most sense...
