Cord vs Webbing for ring setup

New hanger here! I have a Claytor JH on the way and from the sound of it I definitely want to change the suspension. I want to keep the weight as low as I can, but also need to keep the cost down.

I've been doing quite a bit of nosing around on here and other sites. It sounds like the preferred lightweight setup for at least some of you is Spyderline/rings/tree huggers. I was heading that direction, but $25 for 50ft of Spyderline is a bit rich for me!

What would be the next best option for cord that is a little cheaper?

Also, If I go with heavier cord, would it be just as good to use webbing? I'm not sure what the weight difference is between the two.

    Thanks.

OK, I don't use cord, so please forgive my ignorance.

Why do you need 50' of line? That's twice as much webbing as I carry. 11' to 12' on the ends are all I've ever found I need. Using the tree huggers means you need even less line from hammock to tree because the huggers are wrapping the tree instead of the cord.

So I gotta ask again; why do you need 50'? Am I missing something?

I bought some 5mm excell racing-marlow for around $.15 a foot at west marine's bargain center. Its a little heavier than spyderline but worked really well with the rings. They also have vectran and dyneema on occasion.
I'm not sure that every west marine has a bargain center but its worth a look if you have one nearby.

Rappel rings shouldnt be to hard to find, think I will visit a local climbinggear store to see what they have in store...

Aluminum rings? arent they a bit weak? I'm in the 260ibs area... lost about 10-15 allready and will loose more but it takes time.

Jeffjenn, thanks for the link. That is a much better price!

Cannibal, you are right that I don't need 50ft, but it seems like it is cheaper if you buy at least that much. Also, I want enough for a couple of hammocks.

Does anyone have info on the weight comparison between cord and webbing? Thanks.
