of fine materials and construction.
It has less flexibility than, say -- and I give this just as example -- the 11 x 10 tarp from JRB. The Jacks chose to thumb their noses at absolute weight weeniests, and include lots of (low weight) tie outs on the their tarp. They then illustrate the multiple modes of use those redundant tie-outs enable.
The previous Vertex was tapered at the foot end, saving some weight, in a classical (20th century?) way still found on the AHE Toxaway and Shangri-La tarps. Last year, Clark stopped the taper. Maybe their customers buy and use the NX-250, with external pockets, for base-camp and wanted maximum coverage not just for the hmmk, but for more gear, too.
I like the Vertex fly, but don't need it most of the time. Would I buy spend the just-$20 for an upgrade if I were buying an NX-250 new? Absolutely, and especially now. But, as the NX-250 is a 9' long hammock and I know, thanks to models here, how to quickly hang a tarp precisely over a hammock very easily, I often use a barely 8' tarp, the old Clark standard standard size tarp, generally derided, with its substantial taper at the foot end. It weighs less than 10oz, still fits around the spreader hoops, and provides all the coverage I want at the head end, too.

I'm just back from 4 nights in a NX-250 with vertex tarp. We had storms 2 of the nights. blowing winds and a lot of rain. I was quite happy with the tarp. It was $20 well spent and the extra weight is not much.
I've got the vertex and love it. Easily covers the NX250 and my pack.
Vertex os the go.

Have the Vertex with the NX-250 & love it, wouldn't consider a smaller tarp. I also have a Superfly & actually think the construction of the Vertex is nicer, withed they offered a vertex with the door flaps, I would buy one & sell the Superfly.
I have no affiliation with a seller of a new NX-250 with exactly this upgrade. In Lexington, KY on ebay right now.
I use the Vertex fly with my NX 250 and wouldn't want anything smaller. I don't like to stoop too low and so hang my rain fly pretty high, and the size really helps with the blowing rain thing. Well worth the upgrade price.
