--- Challenge ---
Come up 7 cheap diy bugnets for my Scouts to carry with thier hammocks on our upcoming backpacking trip.
--- Materials/Costs ---
Netting - 96" long x 60" wide. (.99/yard)
Edging - 7/8" Grossgrain Ribbon. ($2.79 for 7 yard roll)
Cord - cheap polyester cord. (?? cheap, don't even remember)
Total cost was in the $5.00 neighborhood.
--- Process ---
1. The netting was folded to 30" wide and cut to 96".
2. Each end of the netting was cut on a 45 degree angle.
3. Attach grossgrain ribbon to the ends of the netting. Make sure that the openings on the end are small enough that the hammock whipping cannot slip through the netting. Many of my hammocks have 1.25" ring suspension so my measurements were approx 2".
4. Attach grossgrain to the 45 degree edges.
5. My ridgeline cords were approx 100" to fit the 10ft. hammocks. The cord was simply tied with an overhand knot and can be untied & retied to achieve the desired sag.
--- Results ---
Very pleased. The photos below are a little decieving because it appears that the hammock will sag away from the net. In reality, the opening in the netting conforms to the shape of the hammock & stretches tight accross the bottom of the hammock. To get in or out, just grab the stretchy bottom, sit and swing your legs in. No zippers. No acrobatic closing ritual.
--- Testing (so far) ---
Took 7 Scouts through Maryland on the AT last week. We had plenty of gnats, flies and mosquitoes. No problems.
