2.2 Lash-it and LineLoc3's a "no go"

In an effort to lighten my cuben tarp even more I ditched the supplied line and used 2.2 Lash-it
on all 6 LineLoc3 tie outs.



With sustained winds of ~20 mph the LineLoc 3’s would not hold the Lash-it. It was just too slippery.



Even with a few loops and a slippery half hitch the line would work it's way loose.





So, my plan is to try the mfg supplied line on the ridgeline tie outs. I really like the simplicity
of the Line Loc 3 and would like to keep using them.

I'd like to keep the Lash-it on the corners but cut them shorter and add a knot to stop any slippage
thru the LineLoc3 when the wind kicks up.

Just though you should know. Might save you the same experience.

I would think that having the LineLocs slip in that 20mph sustained wind would be desirable. I wouldn't want my tarp to rip. Keep in mind that 2.2mm Lash-It has a breaking strength of 650 pounds or so.

I wonder what is better(safer for the tarp) in a high wind situation,
a taut tarp or a flapping one?

Probably the best thing to do is move deeper into the trees if the wind comes up like it did. In the situation I had
I could have just taken the tarp down when the wind came up. There were no clouds or chance of rain.
Just a steady wind pushing and tugging on those tie out.

I did want to test this new tarp in wind after all this is where I hike and hang and if brand X tarp
can't hold up to a Colorado storm I'd like to know sooner rather that when I really need it to protect me.

Obviously site selection to minimize wind exposure is the easiest and cheapest option. Another option would be to add a length of shock cord to each guy line to run through the line lock (1/8th" should do fine) to act as a self tensioning line. This won't help in the weigh department but should help with keeping the tarp tight and also give it some elasticity when the winds do pick up. Cuben doesn't stretch (as far as I know) so I would want to ensure that there is a controlled failure point in the attachment system that I won't cry about if it breaks.

If you can't get the line lock to work, I would switch over to using the D ring as the attachment point. I use a prussic loop on my guylines to attach to the tarp. This gives me a build in failure point as the prussic and main line are the same size and it will slip beyond a given amount of force. I could also insert a toggle of some through the prussic for attachment to the tarp webbing. The theory being that the toggle will break before the tarp fabric does.

40' of Spectra guy line included (1.4 oz) I will take a guess it's 2.4
It's very nice guidelines just double the weight compared to Lash it.

I know I'm being a gram counter. Something I didn't think I'd ever do.

For what it's worth - Kelty Triptease holds perfectly in the Lineloc 3's. I don't know how it compares in weight, though. Just another option.

Thanks Jerry, if the Spectra line does not work out I'll give it a try.
I have the tarp setup in the back yard with the Spectra line on
the ridgelines just need a little wind.

Wonder if you can add short piece of shock cord the diameter you need and it can lock on the line lock? That will give you some stretch when the wind blows real hard! Never played with line locks before. Always used taughtline hitch (still do) at the stake side of line. I added shock cord at tarp since it was sil for gettin wet factor to keep it tight. Benefit i found it also gave some give to lines on strong gusts!

This is a bummer. I've been using 2.2 with line locks and love those devices. I guess the wind hasn't been strong enough to have them slip yet but I can see how that could happen.
