    Kelty Noah 9 or 12 / doors

I am looking at a Kelty Noah because you can hang it and make doors for additional privacy if you want. Can you do this with a 9 X 9 or must you go to the larger 12 X 12 if you want to make the doors? Weight is not really an issue. Thanks.

I used the N12 when I first started hammocking. It is a bulletproof tarp, and a great choice. I hung mine on the square, which allowed me to use it with doors when needed (only 2x was that necessary in my first 30ish nights of hammocking).

I think the 9' would be too short. Remember, the 9' is measured at the longest edge. With the cat cut of the tarp, you probably have about 8' tops at the narrowest point. That will hardly cover even a short hammock.

Hang your hammock and measure your ridge. What is the shortest distance you would like covered? Remember, that when you hang the tarp in "tent" mode, it pitches in sharply as it approaches the ground (see the picture below). Will this be too sharp of a pitch for you?

myles to go's Noah 12 tarp:

Here is the JacksRBetter tarp set up in "tent" mode. It shows the inward pitch better.

9 would be too small for the door set up. I dont have much experience. But from doing my own research on the two tarps, the 9 is too small for the square set up...

Thanks for the info. and the pictures. Pictures always help. There are so choices that its quite confusing for a noob. I can see why a person would want more than one tarp! That's why I went with a HH--kind of a kit with everything there that I can get started hanging with and decide what I want to change, if anything, as I get more experience and cash. I really appreciate the wealth of info. and experience that the members here share. I search for answers, which is part of the fun and leads me to interesting places, but sometimes I just have to stop and ask the question.

I bought both the Kelty 9 & 12.. One was on sale for good price.

now seeing that photo, with the 12 in square mode.. making doors... that is pretty slick, never thought of that. would be handy for the winter camping..

I keep learning new things on this site.

Thanks for this photo. I'm getting into the hanging scene and already have a Noah 12. I guess I will be set for a while or until the ultralight bug bites.
