View Full Version : CLOSED: Mahha amsteel group buy

This is for people attending the MAHHA fall hang only, I'm that not a snob, but it is how we are going to save on the shipping cost. Please only respond if you are going to be at the fall hang.

Knotty had a good idea about getting together a group buy for amsteel for the Mahha. I put out some feelers on the Mahha fall hang thread and I think it should be a go. Rather then all of us paying shipping cost for a little I will buy a bunch and split the cost. Edit to show the new price of 14 cents. So I did some pricing and I can get 7/64 th at 14 cents a foot plus shipping. I think I like the idea of 7/64th at 1300 breaking strength for price and weight. I would like to only get the same size for everyone. So I will shop around and look for the best price for what the group wants. So even 50 feet will only set you back about $7. I will have to devide the shipping cost too but that should be minimal. Also we will be doing a whoopie sling workshop Saturday afternoon. Even if you don't want to go with a whoopie sling suspension, Amsteel is great for other purposes such as other suspensions, ridgeline, or pull a horse out of the mud with a truck. I won't know the price until we get the final number of feet we are buying. I prefer grey to avoid smurf hands, but price will determine the color. So please post how much you want to purchase. I will keep the running total on the bottom of this original post. Payment will be made at the hangout.

Dutch - You've probably done the math yourself, but all you need is 450 feet of commitment to go for the spool. 450 ft @ .26 = the 600 ft spool price.

Smurf hands are a right of passage for whoopie sling suspensions. If you avoid them, you aren't getting the full effect. ;)

I just got the following reply to an email requesting grey instead of blue amsteel. It may not be a problem to get in grey since we have quite a while until we need it. I am going to close this group buy on Saturday the 29th so I can get it ordered and cut. I think we are at 1150 feet at this point. This should work out well.

Dutch

The Amsteel Blue product is available in gray color, but let me check their stock. It may be available off the shelf but normally it takes a few weeks to get. Pricing is usually the same as for the standard blue color and we may have to pay a cut charge for taking a partial spool. In 7/64, they may not be willing to do a custom 900' length because of issues with the size.
I will put in a request to my buyer and get a firm price and approx.
availablity for you.

The link I saw in his signature showed it as being .16 and that is what I paid for it BEFORE the HF discount that he might be offering. That is for blue amsteel 7/64 which is what I thought we were talking about here (maybe you have changed it to gray which I think most people like better).

Either way, it was just something that I noticed. I cant even take advantage of this group buy because I cant make the hang but I DO love my amsteel 7/64.:lol:

Last day for this group buy. As far as I know I should be able to get it at $.14 a foot and get it in grey. If you are coming to the hang and want some amsteel, let me know today. Even if you only want enough for 1 set of whoopie sling. That would only be 20 feet or about $3.00. I will be splitting the shipping cost but that will be very little. I will have it all cut up for you at the hang. You can pay me when we are at the hang.

If I get to 2400' I will have to end b/c that is the next full spool. It seems I can get the grey, but only full spools. The partial spool will be blue. If we get to 2400', people can still order, but you should assume it will be blue. The blue isn't bad at all and the smurf hands are really overstated.

I've been using amsteel with adjustable splices for a couple of years, and only recently heard the term "whoopie slings" (sounds precarious). I also use smaller spectra, dacron, or kevlar hollow braids with the same splices using a Cortland "No-Knot" splicing tool. I wish I had a similar tool or fid that would work as easily with the tighter braid of the 7/64" amsteel. I want to see how others do it.

The "no-knot tool" I mentioned is quite small - It's used for hollow-braid fishing lines and kite lines, but I've been able to splice 1/8" flat-braid spectra and 1/16" vectran with it, with some difficulty. Then, reading a post somewhere, I saw a mention of a Dritz "Loop Turner" that sounded like a larger version, so I ordered one. (Google "Dritz 647" for vendors.) Well, it got here, and it is, indeed, a giant "no-Knot tool," and it works great on 7/64" amsteel (gray) and the two smaller lines.
