Hello Hammockforum, hello world,

I am not that good in english, so I let widely the pictures speak. Grammatical errors are desired and serve as amusement :-)

My gear is optimized in the past years with a lot of DIY-Parts to become more lightweight (or ultralight). First line I go to all-season 1-5 day hikes or mountainbike tours in the alps or at the near uplands.
Now I have made a new hammock sleeping setup to increase the sleeping comfort on my activities (with a little bit more of weight) in arboreous conditions.

First i have try a 37gr/m² or 1.1oz/sqyrd Nylon Taffeta for my Hammock.
https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/7/4/5/1/hm-build_2014.10.11_15_04_43_img_1337_thumb.jpg (https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=25066)

It was very lightweight for a 11ft hammock (200gr. / 7 oz), but very strechy and I'm not trust the strength of the fabric after I lay in, so I made a the down underquilt from. Now I have ordered 1.5oz Nyon fabric from the ebay seller rrt_trading_post. I have to wait a loooong time for shipping via USPS and the german customs, so I can made a guinea pig hammock from cheap IKEA-fabric and the underquilt.

For lightweight and full covering me it has an asymetrical parallelogramm shape, wider on shoulder, narrow on the foot end with baffels from no-see-um-netting and Polish 860 cuin down.

After what felt like an eternity i received a little parcel from USA with a nice piece of fabric inside. Cutting with a soldering gun works very well and prevents of fraying.

double rolled 360° hemming in a few minutes and ....

... hammockbody is finished for whipping with a modified W Whipping.

It's hard to hold this whitout slip out of position, so I lock this temporary with a zip lock ...
https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/7/4/5/1/hm-build_2014.10.30_20_06_44_thumb.jpg (https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=25072)

.... befor I tie the whipping. Fishhook disgorger works great for this.
https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/7/4/5/1/hm-build_2014.10.30_20_09_10_thumb.jpg (https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=25073)

The whipping works good, but the asymetrical shape restricts the direction of laying in my hammock so I undo it afterwards and make a "traditional" whipping with a little pull out the edges.

The Top-Quilt I have made about two years ago, and my Poncho/Tarp for rain covering too. So, after I have made a Bugnet, the suspension and a bishop-bag its time to go out an try the new comfort in outdoor-sleeping.

This nice roll contains the Hammock, Bugnet, Top-Quilt and the Under-Quilt.

This is the complete setup. Sorry for the bad mobilephone pictures, my wife has confiscated my camera at this time. Only the backpack, the gaiters (over the rucksack) and the pot are bought, the rest is home made by me.

Dinner at the second day. I know the secret hidden nice tiny place close to my door since a long time, but it is very prone, so I can't sleep there. Now I can hang arround there and build a little table from wood to cook an sit on it.
https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/7/4/5/1/haengematte_2014.11.01_18_14_26_thumb.jpg (https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=25081)

yum-yum asian noodles with tuna with my fine dishware

Time to disassembly and go home. Just a little picture without the Poncho/Tarp....
https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/7/4/5/1/haengematte_2014.11.01_11_14_31_thumb.jpg (https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=25079)

.... and without bugnet
https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/files/4/7/4/5/1/haengematte_2014.11.01_11_19_24_thumb.jpg (https://www.hammockforums.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=25080)

The lesson of the two nights I hang arround is clear:
Hammock Camping increase the weight of my existing sleeping setup (EVA-Mat, Quilt, Tarp, no bugnet) about 600 gr. / 21 oz. But it also increase the comfort of outdoor sleeping to a greater extent.
On the two nights it was in the morning round about 3°C / 37°F and it was cosy, but thats the lower limit of the Underquilt with only 100 gr. / 3.5oz down. For colder conditions i need additionally my EVA Mat inside.
I'm in love with hammock camping.

Nice setup and great DIY skills! If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy the 860 cuin down from?

Welcome to the forums.

A warm welcome from across the pond. That's a wonderful complete rig and all DIY, that's the way I like it as well.

There are a few HammockForums.net members near you as well. Get a few more together and have a group hang with lots of pics to show us the hang from your neck of the woods.

That thread injector looks like quite the machine. Did you get it just for these projects? Please elaborate on that.

Welcome from Germany! It's good to see more Germans on the forum :)

Looks like you're having fun with DIY.

It was very lightweight for a 11ft hammock (200gr. / 7 oz), but very strechy and I'm not trust the strength of the fabric after I lay in, so I made a the down underquilt from. Try Dutchwaregear (http://dutchwaregear.com/diy-stuff/) and/or Ripstopbytheroll (http://ripstopbytheroll.com/) next time. They have excellent fabrics that are specifically made with hammocks in mind. Dutch's 1.6oz Argon (http://dutchwaregear.com/argon-1.6.html) feels very nice (unfortunately I prefer fabrics with more support - I wish he would make a 1.9oz version) - so does RbtR's 1.6oz HyperD (http://ripstopbytheroll.com/collections/1-6-oz-hyperd-ripstop-nylon)... Both are speedy shippers (~2 weeks from door to door) and shipping costs are moderate. If you stay below 150 EUR (including shipping costs, unfortunately), you will only have to pay EU-tax, no customs.

Also have a look at Extrem Textil - they currently have a 1.3oz ripstop fabric that looks like it might work well for hammocks. The price surprisingly is reasonable, too... I just ordered a couple of meters for an indoor hammock.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Thanks for your appreciation of my work.

Nice setup and great DIY skills! If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy the 860 cuin down from?

The Polish Down are buy from extremtextil.de (http://www.extremtextil.de/catalog/Daune-860cuin-250g::719.html) in Germany

I must google the vocable "thread injector" :-)
First I start making my own gear with the domestic machine of my mother. But this machine was overchallenged with very thin oder slippery fabrics and I the results was not up to my expectations.
So I buy this high-speed seamer with bottom- and needle-feed a few years ago.
For the Hammock i buy in addition a double-folded hemmer, a keen asian suisei-clone from ebay.

It's a pleasure to plan projects an sew it on this machine.

Not a hammock, but for example my lightweight down-vest, made in this spring for stays on cold summits in the alps:

Same fabric, down and style like the down under- and top-quilts. Prost

Ah, I suspected it might have come from extremtextil.

Thread injector just means sewing machine. It makes guys feel more manly when using it or something.
