Washing with the wrong detergent maybe, storing compressed ain't god either. So store uncompressed and buy hydrophobic and try to keep it dry. Buy the best quality you can for you budget. If you primarily car camp down may not be the best product for your $$$. If you hike down may be what you're looking for. If you ain't carrying it for miles and trying to watch every gram and cubic inch you could be looking for a synthetic UQ and maybe converting an existing bag. It really boils down to how you camp, how you get to camp and what you want to spend.

Yup! The patch on my right arm tells the story. One night I had the great idea of launching a bottle rocket from my hand...all the burnt wick junk shot back onto my coat. It only take a tiny ember to do major damage.

What does a 20 degree climasheild or primaloft quilt cost? Just figured out a 44x60 quilt for my daughter 20 degree 2.25 baffle and 30% overstuff is going to cost $72 for 800 fp down. Down from Down linens.

Looks to me like I'd need 4.5 layers of Gold to reach same loft and 1.5 yard per layer puts me at $77 per rip stop by the roll. So no cheaper.
