Is this unit any good and is it worth what they are asking. For all you Pfaff fans is there a web site you could recommend that has more info that I could read up on regarding Pfaff machines.

You might get some info- but not price/value- at the Pfaff Yahoo forum:

Aside from price....
Q: Does it work and run freely, and stitch (not just make whirring sounds)?
Q: Are all the accessories included?

$150 is more than I'd pay, but I'm pretty stingy..... :)

I don't know anything about Pfaff's but I agree that is a little high. What are you looking to use it for?

Just my 0.02 here.

I know little about Pfaff machines other then their generally excellent reputation. Even with that reputation, there was a period when plastic gears started to be used by sewing machine manufacturers and while they worked OK at the time, these now have lots of age on them. That doesn't mean they can't be good machines, it just means you need to check them out thoroughly and pay a low enough price that it won't be a disaster if something breaks in a couple of years.

Nice brief write up and extensive internal photos showing plastic gears and upper thread tensioner (that cracks). Scroll down to the third machine from the bottom of the page.... http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://www.naehmaschinenverzeichnis.de/verzeichnis-der-naehmaschinen/pfaff/&prev=search

This indicates the Pfaff 284 is a '70's machine, a time period I tend to avoid due to aged plastic gears. The photos show all the areas to check and speaks to the tendency of the tension devise breaking. With as little as I can find about this machine, expect that no replacement parts will be available if anything breaks.

With that said, if the machine checks out and everything works I'd consider it IF the seller was willing to forget their HIGH asking price and sell in the $25-$50 range.

Thanks, it looks like one defiantly pass on.
