Just a low-key, spur of the moment hang at Tyler State Park (http://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/tyler). I just wanted to extend an invite for any interested parties. Hike, bike, or hang and enjoy the outdoors with some fellow Lone Star Hangers. I have one site reserved and I believe there are 34 more available as of this posting. The areas 5-7 (http://tpwd.texas.gov/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4508_039d.pdf) are grouped together in the reservation system and are first come, first serve.

Nice! Here are a few pictures from today when I went to scout sites. Didn't get any of the sites, but there are quite a few places to hang, although a lot of them are on slopes since its so hilly back where the tent sites are.

I just got one today. I didn't time it, but this park is less than 25 minutes from my driveway. I have not utilized it as much as I should.

Spreadsheet is here. (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LBLmwZJiBwsoir3Oyi9xSS93qsV9vnUt6G6Bqa0s1rI/edit?usp=sharing)

TSP is my favorite orienteering venue. We placed three permanent courses in there. Ask about it at the boat/store place. They should have the maps. All three start right on the steps between the store and the bath house.
Lake is UP. I've seen it down where you saw the post holding up the swim platform.
You were standing on that bridge near the SE part of Lake Tyler State Park. When in the store, look over the door for when the DAM BROKE.
All those trails...been on them all. Even orienteered them....in the DARK.
Probably won't make it to this meet, however, but watching.

Went there with North Texas Outdoors this past weekend we had 60 people in the Lakeview sites with water and electric. Plenty of parking and trees and with 8 people per site max it was a great weekend windy but beautiful by the lake.

This is by far one of my favorite parks. The terrain is what makes it stand out to me. When you drive past the front gate and start into the park there are tons of ravines. It makes me think I'm in a different state other than Texas, because I'm so use to how flat it is around here.

rhjanes
02-12-2015, 12:37
and just down the hill from the main gate, is historical site. CCC built stuff. There is a pond with a rock water fall, etc. Historical markers are around there also. We were surprised when the park OKed us having an orienteering marker in that area.

Hey Guys and Gals, New guy here from Mckinney. The wife and I have been wanting to attend a group hang for a few months now and think this may be one we can make. I checked the reservation site yesterday and it showed zero sites avail, just checked again and there were four avail. for water only!! I look forward to getting out in the new hammocks's and doing some testing next weekend so I should have plenty of questions for all y'all experts! I do have two pups that come along on all my camps and love new people. Do I need to bring anything special to the hang?

Ok so I just tried to reserve a spot for this hang. I've been hoping to be able to go. Got all excited when the computer said there was one tent site available. Tried to reserve it but the system just doesn't like my lifestyle. I live in an RV with no fixed address other than my mail service in FL. The system says my address is invalid and therefore won't let me make the reservation. Of course it's the weekend so the customer service is closed. ARGGGH. Just lined up my dog babysitter today. Do any of you folks have room for one more on your site? The odds of that last site still being available on Mon when customer service opens again, well, let's just say I'm not counting on it.

So if I bring enough for half a hen for each and count on 15, if there are less then I don't have to cook them all. Let's do food on Saturday. I don't mind doing most of the cooking, but I will need as many extra Dutch Ovens as people have. I think I can cook 8 whole hens at a time with the pots I have just need some extras for cornbread or veges.

Mrs. Baby Huey
02-23-2015, 20:09
I prefer the Lodge 12 inch, but for you don't need one that big if you are not cooking for an army like me. I get most of mine on Amazon or at Academy. I really like the ones that have legs on them. If you get one let me know and I can tell you how to get it seasoned.

02-23-2015, 20:10
Don't have a dutch oven yet either. Wow our numbers really picked up compared to who was on the spreadsheet. I'm fine either way with potluck or not but it looks like some hens were the swing vote. haha that's great. So, Saturday for potluck then. Then the rest of the time we feed ourselves right?

That's the plan, but since I usually have a crowd with me I am not sure how to cook for just us two, so come around if you get hungry I usually have plenty of extras.

UncleMJM
02-23-2015, 20:42
There is no such thing as too many Dutch ovens. If you are buying more, you might consider going with a 14. I probably use that size more than any of the others I have.

Another 2 cents worth - if buying additional, when you stay with the same foundry, the sizes match for stacking. That is not always the case with mis-matched ones.

I prefer Lodge - I like American made and it is the only brand still made in the good ole U.S. of A.

My son is a fan of Camp Chef, an American company that imports their iron from China.

Beyond those two, I would shy away from any others. (Personal opinion) There is cheap stuff out there, but if you take semi decent care of it a dutch oven can last generations so why not go with a better quality, good lid fits, cleaner casting… of the ones mentioned above.

Absolutely.

Most "dutch oven recipes" are based on the 12. I'd definitely start there.

My reason for suggesting the 14 to Mamma Huey is because she has 2 12's already. Again, realize you are dealing with opinions here so don't just rely on mine.

Go to the post that you want to quote from and hit the Reply With Quote button in the bottom right hand corner of that box. You can adjust the bracketed commands if you only want to quote part of the post.

Hope that helps.

Hope that helps. /

Piece of cake. In fact, that could be on your list of things to cook although I'd start with cobblers, stews, or roasts as they are more temperature forgiving than cakes and breads.

You have likely figured this out already, but if not, the next things on my list if I were just starting out would be some leather welding gloves or the Lodge (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Lodge-Red-Leather-Gloves/14550456?action=product_interest&action_type=title&placement_id=irs-2-m1&strategy=PWVUB&visitor_id=HDH26mQL_EyocPs7H37-zc&category=&client_guid=7b3b2dcf-f152-48e3-8848-5b237ac56b9c&customer_id_enc=&config_id=2&parent_item_id=14550454&parent_anchor_item_id=14550454&guid=3fae1113-798f-4c68-9f1d-cca421687986&bucket_id=irsbucketdefault&beacon_version=1.0.1&findingMethod=p13n) or Camp Chef gloves; a lid lifter (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Lodge-Camp-Dutch-Oven-Lid-Lifter/14550454) of some sort, Mair makes my favorite, (here's an example (https://www.ceedubs.com/dutch-oven-cookware/cooking-accessories/gloves-mair-lid-lifter-combo.html)) but there are a several out there from which to choose. You don't have to go there or even get that fancy on the lid lifter, in fact you could make do with a claw hammer to lift lids.

I'd also get some tongs for moving hot coals into position, a charcoal starter chimney (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Backyard-Grill-Charcoal-Chimney-Starter/19581245) and possibly a lid stand. (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Lodge-Camp-Dutch-Oven-Lid-Stand/14550457)

Give 'em a little cornbread, maybe some cobbler and a stew---then get 'em hooked on the hard stuff: cast iron pots----

We sure are looking forward to the trip! Hopefully we get to hang... We have new hammocks in but i'm not sure we will end up with everything needed for the 35ish temps they are calling for during the nights by the trip. I plan to bring a tent just in case we get too cold during the night. I have a dutch oven I can bring, not really sure what to make though.

Hello all,
firstly would like to say, I will be coming this weekend(yes it's super last minute but i couldn't get the spreadsheet to work), and second I will be bringing a bike. Its no mountain or trail bike, but I will be bringing it. I plan on bringing some cobbler for the potluck. I brought peach cobbler to the HF big group hang, and people seemed to like it. Looking forward to getting some more group hang time in. I will be getting there around 6 or 7. Hanging in the CooOkie CooOOoon's site.

Baby Huey
03-06-2015, 20:57
There are plenty of trees on our site, if there are no vacant sites. We will just have to work out parking as there is a limit of two vehicles per site. There are empty sites near us so far, but it is opening weekend for spring break, so that may change.

Tyler
03-06-2015, 23:05
Oh that's right, I forgot about that. I get off work @ midnight so I'll just take a quick nap and call in the morning to see what's available. I appreciate the offer, I'll send you a pm tomorrow morning if need be. I don't imagine a collection of hammocks being too hard to spot to find the group.

If you click on your profile tab and then your gallery, at the top there should be a link to upload photos where you can do multiples. You still have to click each one individually, but you don't have to upload individually.
